Select the Dowsing Machine app on your Poketch by cycling through the apps via the red buttons on the right until you reach it. The Dowsing Machine is a four-quadrant field with lines laid out along its horizontal and vertical axes.

When exploring areas for the first time, it's recommended to have your Poketch set to Dowsing Machine so you can scan the area as you progress through it.

Tap Screen to Trigger Radar

Tap anywhere on the Dowsing Machine screen to trigger a small radar, which will reveal if there are any hidden items near you. The hidden item is denoted by a blinking dot on the field and its location corresponds to the number of steps it is away from you. You are always located at the center of the field and each line on the axes corresponds to 1 step in that direction (north, south, east, west).

You also have the option of using your left analog stick and pressing A to trigger the small radar.

Face Item and Press A

After finding the hidden item on the Dowsing Machine, position yourself exactly 1 step beside it (from any direction). Face the spot where the hidden item is then press A to obtain it. You will not obtain the item if you're standing directly above the hidden item.

How to Get Dowsing Machine

Getting Downsing Machine.png
After defeating Team Galactic in Eterna City and receiving the Bicycle at the shop, head south through the Cycling Road on Route 206 to reach the upper part of Route 207. Upon entering Route 207, the Professor's Assistant (Lucas/Dawn) will give you the Dowsing Machine and the Vs. Seeker.

The Professor's Assistant will ask you to pick between their left and right hand, but don't worry, they will end up giving you both items, whichever you choose.
