Diablo 4 - What is Barrier and Barrier Generation

Barrier is a defensive shield strengthened by Barrier Generation in Diablo 4 (D4). Read on to learn more about what skills apply barrier and what Barrier Generation does!

What is Barrier?

A Defensive Shield

Barriers will absorb damage from all sources up to an amount specified by a skill or triggered ability or until the barrier's duration ends.

Barriers Are Additive

Barrier values are added together when multiple barrier skills are used, however, their durations are independent and depend on the skill or passive used.

What Does Barrier Generation Do?

Increases Barrier Strength

Barrier Generation increases the amount of damage a single barrier can absorb, but only from active skills that generate a barrier like Ice Armor.

Does Not Affect Passive Skills

Passive skills, such as the Sorcerer's Protection, are not affected by increases to Barrier Generation and will only provide the specified amount.

How to Strengthen Barrier

Increase Base and Maximum Life

Diablo 4 - Increase Base and Maximum Life
Most active or passive barrier skills scale based on either the Base Life value, determined by level, or Maximum Life value, Base Life plus bonuses. The higher these values are, the stronger the barrier.

Increase Barrier Generation

Boosts to Barrier Generation can be found as affixes on gear, or by socketing Diamonds into Armor pieces.

Obtain Aspects With Higher Values

Keep an eye out for Barrier related aspects with particularly high values in order to maximize their strength.
