How to Access Escalating Nightmare
Use Escalating Sigils
Escalating Sigils initiate a sequence of dungeons, with each one being more difficult and rewarding than the last. The latter tiers of these dungeons will have additional affixes that will make them harder to clear, but contain increasingly valuable loot.
You can obtain these sigils by opening the Grand Horadric Cache at the end of a Horadric Strongroom.
Escalating Nightmare System Explained
A Set of Increasingly Difficult Dungeons
Escalating Nightmare Dungeons is a system introduced in Season 9 that links three Nightmare Dungeons into a progressively more challenging sequence. Each subsequent dungeon introduces additional modifiers, increasing difficulty while offering greater rewards.
After defeating the boss at the end of a Nightmare Escalation tier, you’ll find an altar. This altar displays the affixes for the next dungeon. Interacting with it instantly teleports you into the next tier of the escalation.
Can Appear with Chaos Rift Affix
As of Season 10, Escalating Nightmares may also come with the Chaos Rift affix that appears in Nightmare Dungeons. This allows Chaos Rifts to spawn, allowing players to gain more rewards than the usual Nightmare Dungeon run.
Fight Astaroth at the End
At Tier 4, players face Astaroth, the final boss of each Escalating Nightmare sequence. Defeating Astaroth grants a substantial reward, including crafting materials like Obducite and a variety of equipment.

Obducite and Other Various Materials
Each tier you clear in an Escalating Nightmare Dungeon rewards you with a variety of materials. Completing all four tiers yields even greater rewards, especially Obducite, a key material for Masterworking gear.
Legendary and Ancestral Gear
Clearing each tier and defeating Astaroth at the end grants a generous amount of Legendary and Ancestral gear. This makes Escalating Nightmare Dungeons a valuable activity for players seeking to level up and efficiently upgrade their builds.
More Rewards Based on Dungeon Affixes
Additional rewards can be earned depending on the affixes active during each dungeon tier. Some affixes increase Obducite drops, while others introduce an Obols Reserve in the next dungeon that contains a large stash of Obols to gamble gear for.
