Darkness Lore

Lore Description
"Incantation of the Two Fingers' servants, who once served as the assassins of the Roundtable Hold.

Creates a veil of darkness that conceals the caster. This incantation can be cast while in motion or crouching.

The assassins were themselves once Tarnished who had strayed from guidance, and they pursued their duty in the darkness that is without grace."

Darkness Effects

Darkness is a support incantation that conjures an inky black cloud that blocks the enemies' line of sight. Enemy AI who are hit or have their LoS blocked by the cloud will lose aggro, stopping their pursuit of the player and instead returning to their previous posts.

How to Use Darkness

Block Enemy Line-of-Sight in PvP

Elden Ring - Block Enemy Line-of-Sight in PvP
Darkness in an incantation that has very situational uses. Much like Poison Mist, the usual function of this incantation is to obscure the vision of enemy players when fighting in dark and narrow corridors.

Other than that, Darkness does not really have much use. Enemy players who are hit by the cloud and exhibit a black miasma on their faces can still use the lock on feature. The cloud itself, when used in the open, is too thin to completely hide the caster on the other side. In short, Darkness' only obvious function is as a distraction.

De-Aggro Enemies in PvE

In PvE, hitting enemies with Darkness will cause them to lose aggro. Players can cast this spell when pursued by a large group of enemies to quickly disengage and, in some cases, allow you to fast travel to safety.

However, one thing to note is that this spell does not appear to affect certain enemies. Dogs that are hit with this spell, for example, seem to retain aggro despite clearly being engulfed by the dark cloud. Keep the enemy-type in mind when using this spell to lose your pursuers.
