Cyberpunk 2077 offers a wide variety of character customization options. Learn all the available settings for your character's appearance, and how aspects like male and female gender and your character's Lifepath affect the game.
List of Contents
Like other role-playing games, Cyberpunk 2077 allows you to customize your character's appearance in many ways. But unlike other games, some of your choices might affect some parts of the game, like how your "gender" affects your romance options.
To start making a new playthrough and a new character, select New Game in the main menu.
The first thing you'll get to customize is your playthrough's difficulty settings. Cyberpunk 2077 has four difficulty settings:
Your choice of difficulty will affect the quality of your playthrough. If you're finding it too difficult to play on Very Hard, then maybe turn it down a notch to 'Normal'.
You can do this by going to Settings in the Pause Menu and adjusting the Game Difficulty setting under the Gameplay tab.
Difficulty Settings and How to Change Difficulty
Next up is deciding on the backstory of your character. This unlocks special options when you reach certain story checkpoints. The game has three Lifepaths you can choose from.
Lifepath | Background |
---|---|
Street Kid | Born and raised in Night City, you know the ins and outs of its streets, especially how to survive them. |
Nomad | You were a member of a nomadic tribe, traveling through the Badlands desert as a family. You left that family and decided to head to Night City. |
Corpo | You climbed up the corporate ladder of the Arasaka corporation to get to where you are. Experienced in the cutthroat business world, you will stop at nothing to get to the top. |
Lifepaths and Best Lifepath to Choose
Here, you will choose whether V will have a male or female body. Remember that this is not where you choose V's gender. That comes up later in the Appearance Customization menu through the "Voice Tone" setting.
Like many RPGs, you can choose your gender (body type), and fully customize how your character looks, right down to their facial hair, eye color, and more.
The following is a complete list of the customizable features of your character:
Customizable Features | ||
---|---|---|
Voice Tone | Skin Tone | Skin Type |
Hairstyle | Hair Color | Eyes |
Eye Color | Eyebrows | Eyebrow Color |
Nose | Mouth | Jaw |
Ears | Beard (Male Only) |

Cyberware | Facial Scars |
Facial Tattoos | Piercings | Piercing Color |
Teeth | Eye Makeup | Eye Makeup Color |
Lip Makeup Style | Lip Makeup | Lip Makeup Color |
Cheek Makeup | Cheek Makeup Color | Blemishes |
Blemish Color | Nails | Nail Color |
Chest (Female Only) |

Body Scars | Genitals | Penis Size |
Pubic Hair Style | Pubic Hair Color | - |
Your choice of gender for V will depend on the "Voice Tone" setting in the Appearance Customization menu, not the "Body Type" setting.
If players choose the Masculine voice option, other characters will refer to them with he/him pronouns, and male-oriented terms like "choomba".
If players choose the Feminine voice option, other characters will refer to them with she/her pronouns and female-oriented terms. For instance, Jackie seems to prefer "chica" and "hermana."
Remember that your gender will change the behavior of some characters toward V, especially in terms of romance.
Male Character Creation | Female Character Creation |
---|---|
The settings available during character creation also vary by gender. The set of hairstyles available to Male and Female characters is completely different, and settings related to Beards are exclusive to Male characters.
After choosing what V looks like, you have to choose Attributes next. These stats determine V's skill with various gameplay features both in and out of battle like shooting, hacking, and melee combat.
Below is a list of attributes in Cyberpunk 2077:
Attributes will determine what Perks your character can learn, so choose Attributes that match your favorite playstyle! There is no way to change Attributes that have already been set, so be sure to pick your starting Attributes carefully.
Note that as of the 1.6 version of the game, aside from Attributes, you also cannot change V's body type, tattoos, and Lifepath once you've started your playthrough. If you want to change these, you need to start a new save file, so double-check these before finalizing your own V.
Appearance | Limited |
---|---|
Gender (Body Type) | Permanent |
Lifepath | Permanent |
Attributes | Permanent |
As of Patch 1.5, you can customize V's appearance by interacting with a mirror in their apartment or safehouse and selecting Change Appearance.
You can change several of V's features like their hairstyle and color, but you won't be able to change anything related to their voice, skin, and permanent body parts such as the eye, nose, and mouth type.
A new feature added by Cyberpunk 2077's Patch 1.6 update is the ability to change your character's physical features at ripperdocs around Night City.
V's skin, facial, and body features can now be adjusted and changed at ripperdocs. You can also change V's hairstyle and makeup here.
