Can You Romance Songbird?

No, You Can't Romance Songbird

Songbird, and all other characters in Phantom Liberty, cannot be romanced. CD Projekt Red, before the DLC's release, has announced that no new romance options will be added in the DLC.

Fret not, as you will still be spending a lot of time learning about So Mi's story throughout the expansion's story.

In-Game Description

Song So Mi (Korean - 송소미), codenamed "Songbird", is a netrunner in the FIA. She started out as a freelance netrunner, taking on assignments that others dismissed as well-paying but suicidal. Meanwhile, before So Mi's eyes, corporate data fortresses opened without so much as a shove. She always worked solo and spent every eddie earned on newer, better equipment and ever-more-extravagant means of entertainment. She quickly became a living legend of the trade, although some didn't believe someone of her caliber could exist for long - if at all. The FIA believed. When Song took an oath of allegiance to the New United States and was given the operational nickname "Songbird," the prototype technologies developed by the agency in strict secrecy from foreign governments - and sometimes from her own - were placed at her fingertips. In return, Songbird was forced to quickly learn two concepts that had been completely foreign to her until that point: following orders and playing as a team. The immunity of a government agent, backed and protected by a powerful bureaucratic apparatus, guaranteed Song would remain untouchable. From masking vehicle signatures at secret meetings between NUSA officials and military juntas in Central America, to obliterating the digital footprints of commandos that executed terrorists impersonating the Bartmoss collective, NetWatch agents could only listen to the echoes of Songbird's footsteps in cyberspace—echoes that suspiciously went quiet near the Blackwall.

Contacts V to Rescue President Myers

Songbird mysteriously connects to V through their Relic in the beginning of Phantom Liberty's story and enlists their help to rescue the NUSA President Rosalind Myers from the crashed Space Air Force One in Dogtown.

In return for V's services, Songbird promises to give a solution for V's Relic problem.

Highly-Skilled Netrunner Working for FIA

So Mi is a very talented netrunner who has been jumping around the net long before she joined the FIA. These skills is what led her to join the agency and leave her old life behind to become one of President Myers' trusted hands.

With access to the NUSA and Militech's resources, So Mi was able to improve her own arsenal, chipping in more netrunning cyberware. This also brought her down the path of dabbling with the rouge AIs beyond the Blackwall, weaponizing them to serve Myers' ambitions.

Previously Worked With Solomon Reed

In the official cinematic trailer for the Phantom Liberty expansion, we see Songbird help fellow FIA agent Solomon Reed leave Night City, which was lifted from the ending of the Ten of Swords comic.

Songbird however betrays Reed, as he was shortly attacked after boarding the train, with Songbird providing no assistance whatsoever. Seven years after the incident, both Reed and Songbird cross paths once again through the events that occur during Phantom Liberty.

Does Songbird Affect the Ending?

Affects Phantom Liberty Endings

At the climax of Phantom Liberty's story in Firestarter, you will be confronted with a heavy choice of either helping Songbird or Reed. From here on out, the story will diverge to two different paths depending on which FIA agent you'll help.

Both of these paths will then have their own multiple endings, all of which are tied to Songbird's fate at the end of Phantom Liberty which you will get to decide.

Helping Songbird in Firestarter

If you help Songbird during Firestarter, she will get ahold of the neural matrix at the cost of you betraying Reed. You'll then help So Mi execute her plan, which is to find a cure for the Blackwall ailment she's been enduring and your problem with the Relic.

This will lead to the main quest The Killing Moon, where both of you will head to Morro Rock where the Night City International and Translunar Spaceport is located, as Songbird wishes to go to the moon and find the cure.

After some sneaking around and a tense firefight, Songbird confesses that she has lied to you and that she can only cure herself as the neural matrix can only be used once. Near the end, you can either still help So Mi fly to the moon or give her up to Reed.

King of Wands Ending

If you still wish to help Songbird reach the moon, you'll have to kill Reed during your face off to be able to prepare the rocket that will launch So Mi to the stars.

This will lead to the King of Wands ending in Phantom Liberty, but do note that this will lock you out from the new secret ending for the main story.

King of Swords Ending

If you call Reed in the monorail after Songbird's confession, you'll be able to give So Mi up to Reed and the FIA. This will lead to the King of Swords ending for the expansion, and will unlock a new secret ending for the main game.

Betraying Songbird in Firestarter

If you betray Songbird during Firestarter and wait for Reed and the ICEbreaker, she will momentarily lose control as she gets overwhelmed by Blackwall AI. After wreaking havoc, she'll be captured by MaxTac. You'll then help Reed try to save So Mi from a MaxTac convoy, but ultimately fail.

This will lead to the main quest Somewhat Damaged, where Songbird makes her way to an abandoned facility under Pacifica, where Militech's secretive Project Cynosure took place, to look for a way to end her ailment for good. She then finds out that she's not strong enough to do it herself, and asks you one final favor.

King of Cups Ending

Honoring So Mi's choice to free her by killing her will lead to the King of Cups ending in Phantom Liberty. After putting her down, Reed and Myers will be very disappointed with you for failing your mission as an agent of the FIA.

This will also lock you out from the new secret ending for the main story.

How to Get the King of Cups Ending

King of Pentacles Ending

If you refuse to kill So Mi and wait for Reed to catch up, you will get the King of Pentacles ending.

Here, Songbird will live and you'll successfully finish your mission as an agent, at the cost of So Mi's freedom as she will be sent back to Myers and the FIA. This will also unlock a new secret ending for the main game.

Regardless of the story path taken, if you manage to keep Songbird alive during Phantom Liberty and give her back to Reed and FIA, you will unlock a new secret ending for the main story after finishing the expansion.
