The Phantom Set provides a high base defense compared to the Fierce Diety Set and Barbarian Set. You can use this in the early game to withstand attacks from enemies. However, the armor set will fall off late game as you cannot upgrade it unlike the other two armor sets.

If you cannot upgrade the Fierce Diety Set or the Barbarian Set, you can use the Phantom Set as an alternative.

The Zonai Set is best when using it with the Hover Bike as it increases the operating time for Zonai Devices.

In terms of use in combat, the Zonai Set has the highest Base Defense out of all the exploration armor sets. This means players do not have to switch out armors in the middle of combat.

The Depths Set is one of the recommended armor sets to have when exploring the Depths as it provides Gloom Resistance when equipped. It is also a good set to wear when fighting Gloom Hands and Phantom Ganon to prevent Link from getting inflicted with Gloom.

Each of these helms can affect playstyle and in turn be an effective exploration tool.

Majora's Mask in particular makes Link less noticeable to monsters. Midna's Helmet is also great for exploring the depths as it makes Link gloom resistant. When looking for Korok Seeds, the Korok Mask can detect nearby Koroks.

Finally, the Lightning Helm makes Link lightning-proof. This is best used against lightning-type enemies or those that use lightning weapons.

Best Early Game Armor Set

Hylian Armor Set

The Hylian Set is probably the first full armor set players can get since it is located at Lookout Landing and can simply be bought. It is also one of the easiest upgradable armor sets needing only variations of Bokoblin parts, Ambers, and Rupees.

This set is a mix of early game armor pieces that you can get a easily. These pieces also don't require rare items to fully upgrade which allows you to max all of them early in the game.

You can upgrade the Amber Earrings with Amber and Flint, and Amber and Bokoblin Fangs for the Hylian Trousers.

The Champion's Leathers will require Light Dragon Parts, Sundelions, and Silent Princesses to upgrade. Although the latter two are easy to farm, getting the Light Dragon parts can be a challenge to get if you haven't encountered it yet. Make sure to do the Recovering the Hero's Sword Main Quest first to find the Light Dragon and lower its path.

Grants a Total of 80 Defense at Full Upgrade

Fully upgrading each of these armor pieces can give you a total of 80 defense boost. This provides more defense power compared to other complete armor sets such as Hero of Time when fully upgraded.

You can also get the 80 defense power with the Diamond Circlet. However, this will require several diamonds to fully upgrade.
