Best Early Game Armor

Archaic Warm Greaves

Zelda TotK - Archaic Warm Greaves
Although it has a 2 base defense stat, the Archaic Warm Greaves gives you a permanent Level 1 Cold Resistance when equipped. This makes it easy to travel in cold and snowy areas.

You can obtain it in a treasure chest inside the giant tree trunk northeast of the Gutanbac Shrine in the Great Sky Island. Use Ascend to reach the tree trunk and head inside to find the treasure chest.

Hylian Set

Zelda TotK - Hylian Set
When equipped as an armor set, the Hylian Set gives you a total of 9 base defense stat which gives you enough defense to survive in the early game.

You can purchase the set from the armor shop at Lookout Landing.

How to Get the Hylian Set

Champion's Leathers

Zelda TotK - Champion
The Champion's Leathers has a 5 base defense stat, the highest that you can obtain for an unupgraded body armor in the game. In addition, you can get this piece of armor as soon as you land in the surface.

You can obtain this armor from a treasure chest at the throne room area of Hyrule Castle. Note that you need to bring plentiful of energizing food and elixirs to reach the castle from Lookout Landing.
