Weapon Durability Explained: How to Increase Weapon Durability

Zelda TOTK - Weapon Durability Explained

Weapon Durability is a system in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) that causes weapons to break after reaching a certain breaking point. Read on to learn how the weapon durability system works, how to increase weapon durability, whether there are unbreakable weapons, and more!

How to Increase Weapon Durability

Fuse Weapons to Increase Durability

Zelda ToTk - Fused Weapon
Fusing a weapon that is close to breaking with a material allows you to increase its durabilty and attack power based on the material's Fuse Attack Power stat. It is recommended to fuse the weapon with a gem such as a Diamond to increase its durability further.

Fuse Guide

Talk to Pelison at Tarrey Town to save the fused material

Zelda TotK - Talk to Pelison to save the fused materials
If the fused weapon is about to break and you want to save the fused material, you can talk to Pelison at Tarrey Town and pay 20 Rupees to unfuse the weapon for you.

This process does not destroy the fused material, so you can pick it up at the collection area and use it to fuse with another weapon. This also helps you save rare materials like gems or monster parts from powerful enemies such as the Silver Lynel Saber Horn or Silver Lynel Mace Horn.

Have a Rock Octorok Eat the Weapon to Restore Its Durability

Letting a Rock Octorok eat your badly damaged weapon will fully restore its durabilty. In addition, the weapon will also receive a random weapon modifier.

Note that each Rock Octorok can only restore one weapon, so if you need to restore more you will need to find another different Rock Octorok.

Weapon Durability Causes Weapons to Break for a Certain Number of Uses

Zelda ToTK - Tree Branch

Weapon Durability is one of the returning gameplay features from Breath of the Wild. This system sets a certain limit to all weapons that causes them to break when used for a certain number of times. This requires players to collect extra weapons and fuse them to extend their durability further.

How to Check Weapon Durability

On-Screen Message Appears If the Weapon is About to Break

Zelda TotK - Badly Damaged Weapon
After using your weapons or shields for a while, you will immediately get an on-screen notification about their state. Any badly-damaged weapon will break in a few more uses, so if you want to preserve it, try switching it up as soon as you get that notice.

Weapon is Flashing Red in the Inventory Screen

Zelda TotK - Weapon is Flashing Red in the Inventory Screen
You can also open the Inventory menu and check to see if you have any badly-damaged weapons. Weapons that are close to breaking will be flashing red in the Inventory screen.

All weapons with high damage output will always have better durability. The high damage output allows you to defeat enemies within a short period of time which in turn helps you conserve the weapon because you will be using it less. You can also attach materials with high fuse power to make your weapons stronger.

Best Fuse Materials and Weapon Combinations

Royal Guard Weapons Have Less Durability

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom TotK - Royal Guard

Keep in mind that Royal Guard Weapons are all designed to have less durability despite having strong base powers. These weapons will always end up breaking sooner compared to other weapons with the same or higher attack power.

Are There Any Unbreakable Weapons?

Master Sword is an Unbreakable Weapon

Zelda TotK - The Light Dragon Master Sword
The Master Sword is the only unbreakable weapon in the game. Using it will only drain its energy and you can use it again after putting it back in your inventory.

You can get this powerful weapon after completing either the Recovering the Hero's Sword main quest or the Dragon's Tears main quest and pull the sword from the Light Dragon.

Aside from the Master Sword, there are no other unbreakable weapons. Every weapon you use will end up having a breaking point, so make sure to get as many as you can or fuse them with materials to increase its durability.
