1 | With the Ascend Ability selected, press L (). The skill will activate and a jade-green indicator will appear on the ceiling. |
2 | Position yourself to where you want to ascend to. Then, press A () to Ascend. Link will leap upwards and through the ceiling before emerging on the other side. |
3 | With Link still in the ground, you can press A () to exit on the higher altitude, or press B () to return to where you started. |
* | Note: This ability has some restrictions, but for the most part, as long as there is a ceiling, it can be used. |
Using Ascend will help Link reach higher elevations that are rather difficult to reach or have minimal ways of reaching it.
Unlike the tedious climbing in Breath of the Wild, Ascend will allow Link to traverse hills faster without the need of stamina exhaustion.
Mr. Aonuma has hinted in the gameplay that Ascend can be used to escape cages that have a ceiling. It's possible Link can get caught and locked up in Tears of the Kingdom, but will have the ability to Ascend out of his prison.

You unlock the Ascend ability when you start the Gutanbac Shrine trial. It's required to progress through Gutanbac Shrine and the overall main quest The Closed Door.
The Gutanbac is located at the coordinates 0709, -1383, 1584.
Ascend allows Link to pass through ceilings and ascend to the higher ground above. Without having to use a whole lot of Link's stamina to climb hills, mountains, or being infuriated because the rain makes Link slip while climbing, Ascend lets Link traverse on top of anywhere as long as there is a ceiling underneath it.
Ascend is one of Link's new abilities that help overcome the verticality of the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
All Abilities and How to Unlock
Back in Breath of the Wild, Revali's Gale is an essential ability that helps Link traverse the high mountains and structures. With Revali's Gale gone in Tears of the Kingdom, Ascend is its replacement. This will be useful for exploration since you'll get to go at the top of some huge mountain or structure without needing to climb it and exhaust your stamina wheel.
