The Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is shown to be broken in the official trailers and logo. Read on to learn about possible reasons why the Master Sword may be broken in Tears of the Kingdom.

In Skyward Sword, it's established that Fi is the spirit within the Master Sword. At the end of Breath of the Wild, Zelda has a line of dialogue saying that she can no longer hear the voice within the Master Sword, implying that Fi is no longer present.
This may be the reason why the Master Sword breaks in Tears of the Kingdom, or at least a contributing factor.

In Tears of the Kingdom, we see that Link seems to have the ability to reverse the flow of time specific to objects. This is shown as Link hops onto a large chunk of earth that fell from the sky, and reverses its time to fly upward.
We see another example of this when Link reverses the time of a puddle on the ground and travels upward as a water droplet.
The following is completely speculation at this point, but it's possible that Ganondorf has the mirror opposite ability to Link's: the ability to accelerate time. Perhaps Ganondorf accelerates the time of the Master Sword to break it, ensuring that Link doesn't have the only weapon that can defeat him.
