Riju is returning to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as the successor of Urbosa. Read on for details on Riju's backstory from Breath of the Wild, character traits, as well as her role in Tears of the Kingdom.

Riju's Role in Tears of the Kingdom
Ally of Link and Zelda
In the final trailer of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released last April 13, 2023, Riju was briefly shown to be charging into battle together with Sidon and Tulin.
Given her alliance with Link in Breath of the Wild, Riju will still likely be an ally of the protagonists in Tears of the Kingdom. However, it seems like this time she will be taking a more active part in the story and in battles.

Successor of Champion Urbosa
Riju is also briefly shown to use lightning attacks in the trailer, similar to that of Urbosa's Fury. Riju is also shown to have grown older than when she first appeared in Breath of the Wild and is now actively fighting battles.
Instead of being known merely as Urbosa's descendant, she now likely holds the mantle of Urbosa's successor in Tears of the Kingdom.

Riju first appears in Breath of the Wild as the young Chief of the Gerudo. Link first meets her in the Gerudo Town throne room, where they discover that Link is one of the original Champions and is there to calm Divine Beast Vah Naboris.
Descendant of Urbosa
Riju is a descendant of Urbosa, one of the five Champions chosen to go up against Calamity Ganon and pilot Divine Beast Vah Naboris.

Riju Backstory
Became Chief at a Young Age
Due to her mother's untimely passing, Riju becomes the Gerudo Chief at the early age of twelve years old.
Though she appears confident when Link first meets her, there were instances where she would show self-doubt and concern over her inadequacies.
Her age becomes more apparent when she wears the Thunder Helm that looks too big on her, and when she shows excitement when playing with the stuffed sand seals in her room.
Owner of the Sand Seal Patricia
In both Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Riju is shown to own a sand seal named Patricia. Patricia was said to be a gift from her late mother.
Asks Link to Retrieve the Thunder Helm
Before taking Link to deal with Vah Naboris, Riju asks him to prove himself trustworthy and retrieve the stolen Thunder Helm from the Yiga Clan.
The Thunder Helm is a Gerudo heirloom that has been passed down through many generations, and is valuable to the Gerudo people. Only the Gerudo Chief is allowed to wear it, and it is said to carry some of Urbosa's power.
Helps Link Retake Divine Beast Vah Naboris
Once Link successfully recovers the Thunder Helm and return it to Riju, she will then offer to take him to Divine Beast Vah Naboris.
Riju becomes more confident in her leadership skills after helping Link successfully take down the Divine Beast.
