You can sometimes find axes on random spots on the map. If you managed to spot one, pick it up as soon as you can as this is one of the most useful tools in the game.

Make an Axe with Fuse

Zelda TotK - Fused Weapon
Another way to obtain an axe is to make it yourself with Fuse. Pick any long weapon you have and simply connect it with a stone you find. Any long weapon like swords, spears, and even wooden sticks would work well as your base.

Fuse Guide

Use Stones, Not Rocks

Stone Rock

It's easy to mistake a stone for a rock when looking for materials to fuse your weapons with. If you want to make an axe, make sure that you use a stone instead. You can differentiate these two by simply looking at the shape as stones would have more pointed edges than rocks.

In case you actually ended up fusing your weapon with rocks, you will end up getting a hammer instead, which is more useful when destryoing minerals to get gems and ores.

How to Use Axe

For Farming Logs and Wood

Axe is essentially used to chop down trees and make logs. With the help of your Ultrahand, you can make various transportations with logs to help you cross natural obstacles such as Freezing Waters.

Additionally, you can also chop logs with your axe to produce wood, which you can use for making campfires.
