Ryu-Ge Breakdown

Ryu-Ge Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Ryu-Ge Deck

Ryu-Ge are a series of Level 10 monsters comprised of Dragons, Wyrms and Sea Serpents--a trifecta of monster types that share some form of synergy between one another. Players can see a similar pattern from Beast/Beast-Warrior/Winged Beast and Machine/Psychic/Cyberse.

Their goal is to get their Level 10 monsters on the field, alongside its corresponding Continuous Spells that give an additional effect to their designated monsters. Rank 10 Xyz Monsters are an option for this Deck, but for the most part the Ryu-Ge monsters already have powerful stats of their own to beat down the opponent to 0 LP.

Ryu-Ge Monsters

The first key monsters in the Deck are the non-Pendulum Monsters. Each of them have a designated area they want to be in as part of their effect to get their respective Continuous Spell. Genro Ryu-Ge Hakva wants to be banished, Kairo Ryu-Ge Emva should be in the Graveyard, and Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva prefers to be on hand at all times.

All Ryu-Ge monsters have the effect that should get their Continuous Spells, and they each have their own way to be Special Summoned from their respective locations.

The two Pendulum Monsters are more for setting up these three. Tensei Ryu-Ge Anva is the easier to summon by tributing a Ryu-Ge monster from the hand or field, which can then use its card destruction effect to pop itself, and get a Ryu-Ge Continuous Spell on the field face-up.

The other is Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva, which is a rare Ritual Pendulum monster. It does not need a Ritual Spell Card to be summoned, as its own effect acts as one. It can Special Summon itself from the top of the Extra Deck by tributing a Level 10 Ryu-Ge monster, then by popping up to two other cards on your field you can place an equal amount of Ryu-Ge Continuous Spells face-up on the field.

Because of their Pendulum Scales allowing Level 10 summons, it might be tempting to place them on the Pendulum Zones and just go for a Pendulum Summon. Just make sure to have the right cards for a much easier set-up.

Ryu-Ge Spells

The three Continuous Spells gives their respective monster type in Ryu-Ge an additional effect while they're on the field. Ryu-Ge Realm - Dino Domains provides a negation effect to a Ryu-Ge or Level 10 Dinosaur monster on the field; Sea Spires lets Sea Serpents bounce a card on the field back to the hand, and Wyrm Winds enables a Wyrm monster to drain a monster's ATK on the field to 0.

On their own, they also provide additional effects. Dino Domains provides a small ATK boost, Sea Spires makes your monsters indestructible in battle, and Wyrm Winds is basically a Dimensional Fissure

The other Spell Cards enable this playstyle whenever they can. Ryu-Ge Rising adds a Ryu-Ge from Deck to hand, and a Pendulum Monster from hand to on top of the Extra Deck in one activation. It can also banish itself when you control a Ryu-Ge Pendulum Monster, then Special Summon a Ryu-Ge monster of the same type that it banished from the GY as cost.

Ryu-Ge War Zone makes this strategy so much simpler, allowing the player to send the three monsters to their respective positions: hand, GY and Banishment. Then, if you have Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva on the field, this Field Spell is equivalent to three simultaneous Special Summons from those three locations.

Core Combos and Interactions

Diviner of the Herald One Card Combo

This combo lets you go for a combo with just one Diviner of the Herald which it dumps Herald of the Arc Light to the GY, it can search out Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva and really begin setting up the field. This guarantees the Ritual Monster on the field, as well as a possible set up to a Rank 10 Xyz Monster the player can choose to go into.

Cards Needed on Hand
Diviner of the Herald
Step Description
1 Normal Summon Diviner of the Herald, and activate its effect to send Herald of the Arc Light from the Extra Deck to the GY.
Then, activate Herald of the Arc Light's effect; search out Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva to add to the hand.
2 Activate Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva onto one of the Pendulum Zones, and trigger its effect; add Ryu-Ge War Zone to the hand, and destroy itself to be placed on top of the Extra Deck.
3 Activate the Field Spell Ryu-Ge War Zone afterwards, and target the three Ryu-Ge non-Pendulum Monsters in the Deck; add Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva to the hand, send Kairo Ryu-Ge Emva to the GY and banish Genro Ryu-Ge Hakva.
Be weary of Ash Blossom, Ghost Ogre or Ghost Belle at the ready here.
4 Activate the second effect of Ryu-Ge War Zone; Special Summon all three cards from Step 3; Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva from the Deck, Kairo Ryu-Ge Emva from the GY and Genro Ryu-Ge Hakva from the Banishment.
5 Activate the Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva that you added from the hand earlier; shuffle it back to the Deck to search out Ryu-Ge Realm - Dino Domains. Activate this Continuous Field Spell afterwards.
6 Activate the Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva that you had on the field; shuffle Dino Domains back to the Deck, and destroy Kairo Ryu-Ge Emva. This will trigger Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva from the top of the Extra Deck; tribute Genro Ryu-Ge Hakva to Ritual Summon itself, then use its effect to destroy Ryu-Ge War Zone to place Ryu-Ge Domain - Wyrm Winds.

Boss Monsters

Tensei Ryu-Ge Anva
Tensei Ryu-Ge Anva Tensei Ryu-Ge Anva can Special Summon itself from the hand from the hand by tributing a fellow "Ryu-Ge" monster from the hand or field. On Special Summon, it can target a card to be destroyed. More often than not, it will destroy itself, so it can use its effect to place a "Ryu-Ge" Continuous Spell Card on the field face-up.
Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva
Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva can only be Special Summoned through its own effect counting as a Ritual Summon, where a card on the field is destroyed while this card is on the Extra Deck face-up. Through this effect, it can also place 2 other "Ryu-Ge" Continuous Spells on the field face-up.
Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times
Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times For a Deck that can summon mulitple Level 10 monsters with ease, Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times is now considered a key boss monster for them, and that includes a "Ryu-Ge" Deck. It has a once-per-turn omni-negate, with an optional secondary effect to destroy a card on the field. If this monster has attached materials when it destroys a monster by battle, it can destroy another card on the field for free.
Superdimensional Robot Galaxy Destroyer
Superdimensional Robot Galaxy Destroyer Superdimensional Robot Galaxy Destroyer might be a different choice for a boss monster in Ryu-Ge, but it makes sense as it uses 3 Level 10 monsters as material. Its effect is basically a Harpie's Feather Duster, but the opponent cannot activate Spell or Trap Cards in response to this monster's effect.

Ryu-Ge Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against Ryu-Ge

Tenpai Dragon

Tenpai Dragon

So much of Tenpai Dragon's key cards have been heavily affected already that it reduced its consistency. Most notably, Tenpai Dragon Chundra, Sangen Kaimen and Sangen Summoning are all Limited to 1. However, all it takes is the right circumstances for this Deck to beat out Ryu-Ge.

There is a Deck variation that makes use of the Sky Striker engine to clear the field first before suddenly shifting to the Tenpai Dragons. However, with the amount of negations Ryu-Ge have once they have their own board set up, it all comes down to the luck of the draw in this match up.

Tenpai Dragon Deck List & Card Guide

Maliss

Maliss

As of writing, Maliss is one of the strongest Decks to run in the current meta, being able to play through most of the common hand traps and interruptions because of their effects triggering when banished. All it takes is for one Maliss monster from the Main Deck to be banished, and it's guaranteed to be full combo.

Be prepared to have anti-banishing cards like Artifact Lancea and Soul Drain prepared, otherwise a single banishing of Maliss〈P〉Dormouse can lead to either Accesscode Talker or Maliss〈Q〉Hearts Crypter or Firewall Dragon Darkfluid - Neo Tempest Terahertz. Worst case scenario, the Maliss player has all three in the Extra Deck.

Maliss Deck Guide and Card List

Primite Blue-Eyes

Blue-Eyes White Dragon

Primite Blue-Eyes has only been hit once since the iconic archetype got its additional support and the Primite Engine. Maiden of White and Sage with Eyes of Blue being Semi-Limited only just gave way for the Deck to get more non-Engine pieces and interruptions on board, like Dominus Purge and Droll & Lock Bird.

However, it is still a bad match-up for Ryu-Ge to go up against, especially if the Ryu-Ge player goes second. Blue-Eyes Ultimate Spirit Dragon and Stardust Sifr Divine Dragon still equates to powerful negates, and now with the addition of Crystal Clear Wing Over Synchro Dragon as an option from Crimson Dragon, monster effects to get the key Continuous Spells on the field will be a little harder.

Primite Blue-Eyes Deck List & Card Guide

Tearlaments

Tearlaments

The absolute worst thing the Ryu-Ge player wants to have is to have the Continuous Spells and the Pendulum Monsters be sent to the GY. The Deck has no means to recover them from there, which makes Tearlaments especially dangerous to fight against.

Tearlaments Kashtira and The Zombie Vampire are especially dangerous since they have the option to mill the opponent's Deck. The Deck also has powerful counters against Special Summons, like Tearlaments Rulkallos and Tearlaments Cryme.

Best Cards to Tech Against Ryu-Ge

Heavy Storm & Harpie's Feather Duster
Heavy Storm Harpie The key cards for Ryu-Ge are the Continuous Spells and the Field Spell that lets the player Special Summon up to 3 monsters in one fell swoop. For this, make sure to have some back row removal Spells at the ready. Heavy Storm and Harpie's Feather Duster can destroy them all in one shot, provided they are not negated. Lightning Storm gets an honorary mention, for it can only be used if you have no other cards on your field.
Lava Golem
Lava Golem While the key cards in the Ryu-Ge Deck are the Continuous Spells, what is key about them is that it grants the specific Ryu-Ge monster type their effect, should they be on the field. Removing the monsters means negating the effects, which makes Lava Golem a potent counter against them. Honorary mentions go to the Kaiju monsters and The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode for having the same effect, but different requirements for the number of monsters tributed!
Anti-Spell Fragrance
Anti-Spell Fragrance Anti-Spell Fragrance is currently Limited to 1, but once this Continuous Trap Card is face-up and active on the field, it disables the placing of Spell Cards on the field face-up, even including the effects from the Ryu-Ge monsters. All Spell Cards have to be Set for a turn, and theirs are no exception to the rule.
Clockwork Night
Clockwork Night The Continuous Spells need Ryu-Ge monsters of a specific type to be on the field in order to give their monster counterparts their effects. Clockwork Night changes all monsters on the field to Machine-type monsters, disabling their effects. For an Anti-Meta Stun Deck, this is a boost for their ATK and lowers your own. For Cyber Dragons, this means Fusion material fodder for Chimeratech Fortress Dragon.
