The Ashened archetype has a peculiar playstyle revolving around its titular Field Spell, Obsidim, the Ashened City. So long as that card is on the field, the archetype's DARK Pyro-type monsters can be Special Summoned from the hand with ease.
Part of the playstyle is to use Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction, a monster you actually give to your opponent to enable the full power of the Ashened.

Obsidim, the Ashened City is a card you must have on the field as soon as possible. This is the card the entire Deck plays around, and with an effect that turns the opponent's monsters into Pyro-type during their turn, it is for good reason.
It also doubles as a free recycle and draw in a single effect during the End Phase, and when it gets destroyed for whatever reason, it Special Summons an "Ashened" monster onto the field.

The other key card is Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction, a monster summoned to the opponent's side of the field by destroying a Field Spell you control--in this case, it's Obsidim. This guarantees the free Special Summon on the Field Spell's effect, on top of this monster searching out an "Ashened" Continuous Trap. If it leaves the opponent's field? It just wipes out all monsters they control.

Going off from Veidos's effect to add an "Ashened" Continuous Trap, there are two options. The one you want to search first is Ashened to Endlessness which gives the ability ot Fusion Summon using the Veidos in the opponent's field as material. It even gives an ATK boost for each material used on that Fusion Summon.
Ashened for Eternity is the secondary option, as it serves as a searcher for Veidos or an "Ashened" monster. It can steal back a monster you gave to the opponent, and make their monster lose ATK based on the retrieved monster's stats.

The key monster for the Deck is Priestess of the Ashened City, whose effect searches any "Ashened" card. Have this card at 3 copies at all times for the best chance to get crucial cards as soon as possible.

Spearhead and Shaman are Level 4 monsters, so these monsters are safe for Normal Summons. Shaman can shuffle back "Ashened" cards in the GY or Banishment and can search out Obsidim, while Spearhead can tribute itself to bounce back a monster the opponent controls--provided they control any monster that has 2800 or more ATK (coincidentally the same ATK Veidos has).
Hero can pop a Pyro-type monster on the field, and if it destroys Veidos with this effect, this card can instantly place Obsidim onto the Field Spell Zone face-up. King helps swarm the field with monsters, allowing them to Special Summon from the hand or even from the Deck if the conditions are met.

Awakening of Veidos immediately places Obsidim onto the Field Spell Zone face-up, and if the opponent has their own Field Spell, this card searches out a Level 5 or higher "Ashened" monster.
In contrast, Extinguishing the Ashened needs to send a DARK Pyro monster to the GY as cost for its search, but it can banish itself from the GY to conduct a Fusion Summon for a Pyro-type monster.
For more generic searching, Bonfire can help add Shaman of the Ashened or Spearman of the Ashened .

Because the Main Deck Veidos is often in the opponent's side of the field, the heavy use of Super Polymerization is encouraged here. This is especially crucial during the opponent's turn when the Field Spell turns the opponent's monsters on the field into Pyro-type monsters.
Embers of the Ashened is the the first boss monster of the archetype. On summon, it adds a Field Spell from your GY back to your hand, and it destroys a Pyro-type monster automatically during the Damage Step, before launching a second attack.
The real monster to prioritize is Veidos the Dragon of Endless Darkness. Immune to card destruction effects, and cannot be targeted by monster effects, this Veidos destroys all Spells and Traps the opponent controls on Fusion Summon. Then, it can destroy a card in its activation by sending an Ashened monster on your field to the GY.

As with the usage of Super Polymerization, the usual targets are also present in the Extra Deck. Mudragon of the Swamp and Garura, Wings of Resonant Life are great monsters to pivot into to get rid of ridiculous boards, while Predaplant Dragostapelia can be a targeted Quick Effect negate against monsters.

A new addition to Red-Eyes is the Kashtira Engine, which synergizes well with archetypes that share the Level 7. Luckily for Ashened, they do have a Level 7 monster in Hero of the Ashened.
Kashtira Fenrir and Kashtira Unicorn are great monsters to summon first for protection and punishment for the opponent using monster effects. The latter can search Kashtira Birth which not only can bring back the Kashtira monsters from the GY or banishment, it can also make Normal Summoning Level 7 monsters tribute-less.
| Card on Hand | |
|---|---|
| Step | Description |
| 1 | Activate Awakening of Veidos, and place Obsidim, the Ashened City face up on the opponent's Field Spell Zone. Afterwards, in the same effect, add Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction to your hand. |
| 2 | Activate the effect of Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction; target and destroy the Field Spell on your opponent's field, to Special Summon itself onto the opponent's field. Afterwards, Set Ashened to Endlessness directly from the Deck. |
| 3 | Upon being destroyed and sent to your GY, activate Obsidim, the Ashened City's effect; Special Summon King of the Ashened City from the Deck. Afterwards, trigger its effect; Special Summon Priestess of the Ashened City to your hand. |
| 4 | On summon, activate Priestess of the Ashened City; add Extinguishing the Ashened to the hand. Then, activate the newly-added Spell Card; send a copy of Veidos to the GY, then immediately add it back to the hand. |
| 5 | Activate the second effect of Extinguishing the Ashened from the GY; banish it to conduct a Fusion Summon. Using King of the Ashened and Priestess of the Ashened as materials, Fusion Summon Embers of the Ashened. |
| 6 | Upon Fusion Summoning, trigger the effect of Embers of the Ashened; retrieve Obsidim, the Ashened City from the GY, then afterwards activate it on your Field Spell Zone. |
| 7 | Pass the turn to your opponent. |

| Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction | |
|---|---|
|
|
Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction, more often than not, is summoned to the opponent's side of the field. This is what the Deck's entire strategy revolves around; as soon as that happens, destroy the Ashened City, and set Ashened to Endlessness. Its field wipe is what makes this card crucial, and inexperienced players might not realize the effect triggers even if this card is on the opponent's field. |
| Veidos the Dragon of Endless Darkness | |
|
|
Veidos the Dragon of Endless Darkness is the monster to be summoned while using the other Veidos as Fusion Material. Immune to card destruction effects and targeted monster effects, this card wipes out all Spells and Traps the opponent controls upon being Fusion Summoned. It also destroys a card that activates its effect once per turn. |
| Embers of the Ashened | |
|
|
Embers of the Ashened, while a Fusion Monster, serves as support for the Fusion Veidos. It recycles a Field Spell from the GY to your hand (usually the Ashened City). This card takes advantage of the playstyle of turning the opponent's monsters into Pyro-type; it destroys a Pyro-type monster it battles, and then it can launch another attack once per turn. |

Tearlaments has a playstyle that can be far too overwhelming for an Ashened Deck to deal with, unless the latter has the right hand traps. Even with the loss of Primeval Planet Perlereino, their capacity for Fusion Summons is well near second to none, especially with its flexibility on Extra Deck monsters.

Why bother letting the opponent play the game when the perfect hand is set? That's the current playstyle for Gimmick Puppets, whose new cards managed to let play a rather consistent FTK combo.
Had it still had Gimmick Puppet Nightmare, this Deck would have been the single most dangers Deck against Ashened, but for now, players have to counter and survive its FTK attempts first.
Gimmick Puppet Deck List & Card Guide

Despite Tenpai Dragon Chundra and Sangen Summoning being set to Limited starting January 9, 2025, Tenpai Dragon is still a powerful Deck once it manages to get its crucial cards.
It becomes even stronger in the Battle Phase. Be very scared if they manage to open Paidra into Sangen Kaimen, into Chundra; that is already a lost Duel.

| Dimensional Barrier | |
|---|---|
|
|
Ashened's playstyle can be seen from a mile away onec it mananges to set up Veidos and Ashened to Endlessness. Once they see it coming, a Trap-centric Deck can make use of Dimensional Barrier to deny the Fusion Summon, and even negate any Fusion monsters that are already on the field. |
| Bystial Druiswurm | |
|
|
As the Ashened are all DARK monsters, they are susceptible to the effects of the Bystial archetype. Especially dangerous is Bystial Druiswurm, who is now fully unlimited to 3. The banish effect from the GY is one thing, but being able to safely send cards on the field to the GY if he himself gets sent there is a great interrupt against Ashened Decks. |
| Droll & Lock Bird | |
|
|
Because of the currently small number of cards within the archetype, the Ashened need every search effect they can get to get to their key cards as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Droll & Lock Bird has once again risen in popularity by proxy from the other Decks in the current meta. A single use of this card nullfies all other search plays an Ashened Deck can commit to. |
| Necrovalley | |
|
|
Quite a number of Ashened effects recycle cards from the GY, especially the Ashened City Field Spell. If a player decides to tech in Necrovalley, they have to deal with this Field Spell first before they have a chance to retrieve their own Field Spell. |
