Melodious Breakdown

Melodious Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Master Duel - Melodious

Melodious has been an interesting Fusion archetype since its initial release in the card game, with its initial wave of cards focuising on summoning Fusion Monsters that are good in the Battle Phase. With the release of more support in the Geas of the Light Selection Pack, its playstyle has adjusted for a bit more flexibility.

Melodious Cards

Sonata the Melodious Diva Soprano the Melodious Songstress Aria the Melodious Diva Canon the Melodious Diva

In a classic Melodious Deck, Sonata, Soprano, Aria and Canon are mainstays. Both Sonata and Canon can Special Summon itself from the hand, while Soprano can act as a Fusion Spell with its effect, on top of its ability to recycle a Melodious monster from the GY. Aria is a floodgate that protects other Melodious monsters from targeted card effects and battle destruction.

Shopina the Melodious Maestra Mozarta the Melodious Maestra

Shopina the Melodious Maestra locks you out of non-LIGHT monster effect activations, but helps out with reycling Melodious monsters from the GY back to yur hand. Mozarta the Melodious Maestra provides an additional Special Summon of a Melodious monster from the hand once per turn, becoming a combo piece extender.

Refrain the Melodious Songstress Couplet the Melodious Songstress

The newer additions, Refrain and Couplet, are Pendulum Monsters, thus opening up the archetype to make use of these cards and a small Melodious package with other archetypes, like Vaylantz and Supreme King Dragon.

Refrain the Melodious Songstress is a searcher when Summoned, and can place itself in the Pendulum Zone from the field when a "Melodious" Fusion monster is Fusion Summoned.

Couplet the Melodious Songstress can summon a fellow "Melodious" monster from the hand or GY when added to the hand outside of the initial Draw at the start of the turn. As a Pendulum Scale, it provides a way to add a "Melodious" Spell/Trap to the hand.

Ostinato 1st Movement Solo Melodious Concerto

1st Movement Solo is one of the main searchers of the Deck, as it can Special Summon a Level 4 or you Melodious monster from the hand or Deck. This, however, locks you into only using Melodious monsters for the rest of the turn.

One problem, however, is that to use Ostinato, you should not be controlling any monster on your side of the field. That Fusion Monster summoned with this Fusion Spell gets destroyed at the end of the turn, and the materials used to summon it will be Special Summoned back onto the field.

Melodious Concerto is the new main Fusion Spell for this archetype, and it can even use Refrain or Couplet if they are placed in the Pendulum Zones!

Melodious Extra Deck Monsters

Schuberta the Melodious Maestra Bacha the Melodious Maestra Bloom Diva the Melodious Choir
Bloom Prima the Melodious Choir Flowering Etoile the Melodious Magnificat Bloom Harmonist the Melodious Composer

Inititally, Melodious players would have to get to Bloom Diva the Melodious Choir as fast as possible; it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects, and the owner takes no battle damage involving this card. If it battles a Special Summonsed monster, it can reflect the damage back to the opponent.

With the introduction of the newer cards, the first card to summon is Bacha the Melodious Maestra, as while it is one the field, the opponent cannot negate the activated effects of Melodious monsters. On Fusion Summon, it also Special Summons a Melodious monster straight from the Deck, and has a floating effect that resurrects a Melodious monster from the GY.

Bloom Prima the Melodious Choir can launch a second attack, and on Fusion Summon can recycle a Melodious monster from GY to the hand. The newest boss monster, Flowering Etoile the Melodious Magnificat, can temporarily banish your Melodious monsters on the field to bounce cards from the opponent's field to the hand.

Boss Monsters

Bloom Diva the Melodious Choir
Bloom Diva the Melodious Choir When battling using Bloom Diva the Melodious Choir, you receive no battle damage regardless of the opponent's monster having more ATK . Furthermore, the ATK equivalent is dealt to the opponent as effect damage, and the monster that this monster battled will be destroyed via effect.
Bacha the Melodious Maestra
Bacha the Melodious Maestra While Bacha the Melodious Maestra is active and on your field, activated effects from your other Fusion "Melodious" monsters cannot be negated. On Fusion Summon, its effect lets you Special Summon another "Melodious" monster straight from the Deck for free. It also has a floating effect where if this card is sent to the GY, it can bring back a different "Melodious" monster from the GY apart from itself.
Flowering Etoile the Melodious Magnificat
Flowering Etoile the Melodious Magnificat Flowering Etoile the Melodious Magnificat is the archetype's newest boss monster. Through its Quick Effect, it can bounce cards from the opponent's field by the number of "Melodious" monsters you banish from the GY. When it leaves the field, it also triggers a floating effect that Special Summons a "Melodious" monster in the Deck or even the Extra Deck.

Melodious Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against Melodious

Yubel

Master Duel - Yubel

Dueling against Yubel might be an interesting interaction with Melodious, especially if it's a Yubel monster boosted with the effect of Nightmare Pain against Bloom Diva. This might be more of an even match, so long as Yubel doesn't get to its other forms, or be boosted wit the help of the Unchained Engine via Unchained Soul of Rage.

Tenpai Dragon

Master Duel - Tenpai Dragon

Try as Melodious might, it is extremely hard to deal with Tenpai Dragons once they make it to the Battle Phase. If they can, they will absolutely go into Sangenpai Transcendent Dragion as quickly as possible to deny the "Melodious" boss monsters their effects during battle. And if they manage to go into full combo? That is a 6000 ATK Trident Dragion with three attacks eager to win the game..

Horus

Master Duel - Horus

The effect of King's Sarcophagus will be the key difference here when it comes to battling against Horus. Its effect to send a monster a Horus monster battles automatically to the GY during the Battle Step only triggers once per turn, and targeted effects will not work with the "Horus" monsters while the Contiunuous Spell Card is on the field.

"Melodious" players will have to be cautious, and "Horus" players will have to use their effects wisely.

Best Cards to Tech Against Melodious

Kaijus
Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju You can expect a Kaiju or a monster with similar effects of tributing your monsters if they do not want the trouble of having to battle it. Easy choice to consider is Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju for havin the lowest ATK among all Kaijus, but other monsters like Lava Golem and Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode can also work if their requirements are met.
Super Polymerization
Super Polymerization Most of the monsters in this Deck are LIGHT and Fairy-type monsters. This makes them uniquely susceptible to be used as Fusion Material by the opponent should they have Super Polymerizatio, which will more often than not result in a Mudragon of the Swamp or Garura to their own benefit.
Forbidden Droplet
Forbidden Droplet A well-timed use of Forbidden Droplet during the Battle Phase will make the "Melodious" boss monsters easier to defeat in battle, and even deny them the activation of some effects that only trigger when they do battle. Their ATK getting halved is a nice bonus touch as well.
Dimensional Barrier
Dimensional Barrier If a player that uses lots of Trap Cards find out quickly you play a Fusion-based Deck in Melodious, they will not hesitate to fire Dimensional Barrier the moment you attempt to conduct a Fusion Summon. It only gets worse if they also run Transaction Rollback, meaning they essentially have its effect around 4-6 times.
