SPYRAL Control Breakdown

SPYRAL Control Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

SPYRALs value maintaining presence on the field, including key monsters like SPYRAL Super Agent and SPYRAL Double Helix, using cards that should make it easy to get them out on the field, like SPYRAL GEAR - Drone, SPYRAL Quik-Fix, SPYRAL Resort and SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red.

Their signature style has them predicting the top card of the opponent's Deck to earn some powerful effects. On top of that, the archetype can set up the opponent's Deck in a way that they can rig the "prediction" to guarantee the effect.

Main Deck Monsters

SPYRAL Quik-Fix SPYRAL GEAR - Drone SPYRAL Master Plan
SPYRAL Sleeper SPYRAL Super Agent SPYRAL Tough

Like actual spies that rely on information, SPYRALs rely in getting to rearrange the top cards of the opponent's Deck to be able to correctly predict cards at the top of the Deck, and when correct it pays off with effects like destroying all the opponent's Spells and Traps, or getting a SPYRAL monster Special Summoned.

Because of their synergistic effects, players can expect a massive combo that can surprise the opponent, and can get out of hand if the opponent has no response. While it is a Control Deck due to its ability to "predict" the cards the opponent has, it can quickly switch into an Aggressive playstyle with a powerful board.

Illusion of Chaos Engine

Illusion of Chaos Magicians Preparation of Rites

Being able to draw and throw unusable cards is always an advantage, which is why the Illusion of Chaos Engine is a welcome addition to the Deck Recipe.

Players can always toss out the Ritual Monsters since the Deck doesn't have any Ritual Spells, but Magicans' Souls provides Rank 1 Xyz Support and materials on the field for the player to use as Link Materials.

Spell and Trap Cards

SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red SPYRAL Resort

The two crucial Spell Cards for the Deck is SPYRAL Resort, and activating it is needed if you have to find a certain "SPYRAL" monster. The Field Spell's search effect does not even have a hard once-per-turn clause, and it also protects your "SPYRAL" monsters from targeted card effects.

SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red acts as a pseudo-Premature Burial, being able to Special Summon a "SPYRAL" from the Graveyard. So long as this is equipped to that Special Summoned monster, it cannot be destroyed by battle.

Where Arf Thou? One for One

Where Arf Thou? can search out either Magicians' Souls and SPYRAL Quik-Fix, but you have to Normal Summon them to avoid a 2000 LP cost. One for One Special Summons another Level 1 Monster after discarding a monster, which is most likely the same two Level 1 monsters.

SPYRAL MISSION - Assault SPYRAL MISSION - Rescue SPYRAL GEAR - Utility Wire

The archetype also happens to make use of some Continuous Spells and Traps to maintain advantage. SPYRAL Mission - Assault provides additional draw power if a "SPYRAL" monster you control is destroyed by battle, or if you destroy a card via "SPYRAL" monster effect.

SPYRAL Mission - Rescue recycles your monsters from the GY back to the hand, and can Special Summon one after this card is banished from the GY. SPYRAL GEAR - Utility Wire sends a face-up card the opponent controls and places it on top of the Deck, allowing the prediction effects to be fulfilled much more easily.

Extra Deck Monsters

Spyral Double Helix

The world is your oyster when it comes to Link Monsters, so running the most splashable Link Monsters is highly encouraged for this Deck. Just don't forget to run about two copies of SPYRAL Double Helix, as it provides quite a number of effects if it can predict the top card of the opponent's Deck.

Sylvan Princessprite Ghostrick Dullahan

As for Xyz Monsters, it might be better to run with some Level 1 Xyz Monsters since SPYRAL Quik-Fix is pretty easy to summon. Sylvan Princessprite can add a Spell or Trap if it's excavated through its effect, while Ghostrick Dullahan halves the opponent's monsters' ATK, leaving them vulnerable for your more powerful monsters down the combo.

Core Combos and Interactions

Basic Full Combo

1 Normal Summon SPYRAL GEAR - Drone. Upon being Normal Summoned, use its effect to rearrange the top three cards of your opponent's Deck to your liking.
2 Activate One For One, discard a monster from your hand (preferably SPYRAL Master Plan), and Special Summon SPYRAL - Quik-Fix.
3 Upon Special Summoning SPYRAL - Quik-Fix, activate its effect, and search out SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red.
4 Use Drone and Quik-Fix as materials to Link Summon SPYRAL - Double Helix.
5 Use Double Helix's effect, and call out the top card of your opponent's Deck. Because of SPYRAL GEAR - Drone, the information is already available to the player.
6 After calling the prediction correct, use the effect of SPYRAL - Double Helix to Special Summon from the Deck SPYRAL - Super Agent.
7 Upon being Special Summoned, activate SPYRAL - Super Agent's effect, and destroy a Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls.
8 Activate SPYRAL Resort.
9 Use SPYRAL Resort's effect to search out a copy of SPYRAL - Tough.
10 Activate SPYRAL Gear - Big Red, and use it to Special Summon from the Graveyard SPYRAL Master Plan.
11 Activate SPYRAL Master Plan's effect, search out a copy of SPYRAL MISSION - Rescue, and set it on your field.
12 Upon your End Phase, fulfill the cose of SPYRAL Resort, and shuffle back SPYRAL Quik-Fix back into the Deck.

Boss Monsters

SPYRAL Super Agent, SPYRAL Master Plan and SPYRAL Double Helix are the signature Boss Monsters within this Deck, and the entire strategy of this Deck revolves around these three cards. Combined with the support of other SPYRAL monsters, Super Agent and Double Helix's prediction effect will be guaranteed to be correct

Lightning Vortex may need to discard a card as a cost, but being able to destroy all face-up monsters your opponent controls is a good way to keep your SPYRAL monsters safe; just watch out for effects and hand traps that can begate this Spell Card.
The Warrior Returning Alive is a good option if you SPYRAL Resort is not yet enough to recycle the monsters in the Graveyard back to the Deck.
Double Summon can come in very handy, especially if you start with a hand including this card, SPYRAL GEAR - Drone, and SPYRAL Quik-Fix.
Bottomless Trap Hole deals with the monsters with high ATK, regardless of how they are summoned, so long as there is nothing to negate the Trap.
Face-Off prevents any Quick-Play Spell or Trap card from messing with the Battle Step.
Phantom Knights' Fog Blade pins down the opponent's Effect Monsters, preventing them from attacking or activating their effects.
Battlin' Boxer Veil can let the player survive a little longer, especially after receiving battle damage from the opponent's monster.
SPYGAL Misty has an effect that lets the player draw a card when it calls its prediction from its effect right.
・More copies of SPYRAL Gear - Last Resort can act as a makeshift Equip Spell to the SPYRAL monsters, granting immunity to targeted card effects and from being destroyed by battle or card effect.

SPYRAL Control Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against SPYRAL Control

Traptrix

Master Duel - Traptrix Top Image

Playing similar to Counter Fairies, this is an anti-meta Control Deck that answers most of the monsters a SPYRAL Control Deck can summon. Traptrix can punish this Deck due to their lack of mass Spell/Trap removal, while taking advantage of the opponent's lack of strong monsters.

Traptrix Deck List & Card Guide

Gravekeeper's

Gravekeepers Top Image

SPYRAL Control is a Deck that takes advantage of using the Graveyard as a secondary resource, like the effects of SPYRAL Gear - Big Red and SPYRAL Resort. The Gravekeepers' signature Field Spell, Necrovalley, locks down the cards sent to the Graveyard so they cannot use effects, nor move the cards out from within to anywhere else.

Eldlich Control

YGO Master Duel - Eldlich Control Deck Guide Banner

Eldlich and its ability to be teched into any style of Deck as a Control Deck is legendary, and is currently one of the strongest Control Decks in the game. An Eldlich Control Deck has numerous floodgates that can disrupt a SPYRAL Deck, and no monster in the Deck can match up to Eldlich's 2500, often boosted to 3500 thanks to its own effect.

Best Cards to Tech Against SPYRAL Control

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring
Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring One of the best hand traps in the game, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring can stop Double Helix's effect even after it calls the prediction correct. If there are plans on Special Summoning any more monsters from the Deck, beware of this card.
Skill Drain
Skill Drain SPYRALs rely on monster effects, especially with SPYRAL GEAR - Drone being able to rearrange the top cards of the opponent's deck, and the ability of Double Helix to Special Summon another SPYRAL after a correct prediction. As long as Skill Drain is face-up on the field, SPYRAL monsters are ineffective.
Rivalry of Warlords
Rivalry of Warlords SPYRAL still relies on a bit of Special Summoning monsters, and having multiple monsters on the field to get Double Helix out. Rivalry of Warlords will completely shut down any chance to have the materials needed, forcing them into one monster.
Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy
Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy There are plenty of Spell Cards within a SPYRAL Deck, but stopping even one can derail all plans. Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy has the unique effect of absorbing a Spell Card it negated as attach to itself as Material. It also has the effect of being able to redirect monster attacks to itself, and 3000 ATK is a big wall for most of the SPYRAL Monsters.
