The Winged Dragon of Ra Breakdown

The Winged Dragon of Ra Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Compared to the more meta-defining decks, The Winged Dragon of Ra is rather slow in comparison. They do not swarm the field, but rather control it by using effects that help clear the field, and sometimes uses the opponent's own monsters against them as tribute fodder.

The Winged Dragon of Ra.png The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode.png The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix.png

The titular monsters all share one thing in common: once they are on the field, they command the pace of the game. The original Winged Dragon of Ra ends up having pretty high stats whenever it is summoned, whether through its own effect or by the help of another version of itself.

Sphere Mode can end up clearing pesky monsters on the field by turning them into tribute fodder, much like the Kaiju archetype is known for. It keeps itself safe through immunity from attacks and targeted card effects, and it shifts ownership until it can be tributed to bring out the original Winged Dragon of Ra with 4000 ATK and DEF.

Immortal Phoenix can be considered the emergency button. When The Winged Dragon of Ra gets sent to the Graveyard, this card takes its place from the GY. The opponent cannot activate anything to counter this card's Special Summoning, and it can send a monster to the Graveyard at a cost of 1000 LP, without any limits.

Metal Reflect Slime.png Egyptian God Slime.png Guardian Slime.png Reactor Slime.png

To help bring out the God card with relative easy while being able to protect yourself, you need to maintain presence on the field. The various Slime monsters are key here. Metal Reflect Slime and Egyptian God Slime make for an effortless combo to have a powerful monster on the field while maintaining presence to prevent direct attacks, and the latter can even be used as all three tributes to summon The winged Dragon of Ra.

Reactor Slime helps out by bringing out two Tokens whenever its summoned, and allows an additional summon for Divine-Beast monsters, which is the monster type of the Winged Dragon of Ra. Furthering the defensive playstyle is Guardian Slime, which can be Special Summoned from the hand the moment you receive damage of any kind, being able to earn DEF equal to an attacking monster's ATK for a stalemate.

Ancient Chant.png Millennium Revelation.png Blaze Cannon.png Mound of the Bound Creator.png Soul Crossing.png

Most of the support for this Deck comes in the form of Spell Cards, and there are quire a lot dedicated not only to the Egyptian God Cards, but for The Winged Dragon of Ra exclusively. Soul Crossing, Ancient Chant and Millennium Revelation all make the summoning of the Divine-Beast monster easier; Blaze Cannon provides a choice for benefit for the monster between effect immunity, an ATK boost or a field wipe; and Mound of the Bound Creator being a powerful Field Spell that provides card advantage and protection to the Egyptian God.

Boss Monsters

The Winged Dragon of Ra
The Winged Dragon of Ra The titular monster and one of the three Egyptian God Cards, The Winged Dragon of Ra can often be summoned as a game-winning monster with very high ATK. If summoned through its Sphere Mode variant, this card has a solid 4000 ATK and DEF. If brought out using its own effect, and you managed to amass large amounts of Life Points, an ATK from this God can result in an OTK.
Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe
Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe If you happen to have two Level 10 monsters on the field, which is the Level shared by Egyptian God Slime and The Winged Dragon of Ra, you have the chance to make them Xyz Material for the Superdreadnought Rail Cannon combo, which involves Gustav Max, and this card: Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe.
Egyptian God Slime
Egyptian God Slime Its Fusion Material Requirements look rather daunting, but with Metal Reflector Slime acting as a cheat code, Egyptian God Slime can be brought out on the field with relative ease. Its acts as a wall against monsters with ATK lower than its stats, and it can act as all three tributes for the Summoning of The Winged Dragon of Ra.
The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix
The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix When The Winged Dragon of Ra gets to use its Immortal Phoenix Mode, the opponent cannot use cards or effects in response, making its effect resolution unstoppable. It is also immune to all card effects, and lets you send 1 monster from the field to the GY. Lastly, it has a floating effect that can bring out and revert into its Sphere Mode, regardless of summoning conditions.

The Winged Dragon of Ra Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against The Winged Dragon of Ra

Drytron Fairy

Drytron Fairy Top Image.png

On top of having one of the strongest effect-negating monsters in the game in Herald of Ultimateness, Drytron Fairy Decks can easily overpower the titular Winged Dragon of Ra on top of having multiple ways of clearing the board.

Drytron Fairy Deck Guide

Virtual World

Virtual World Banner.png

The Winged Dragon of Ra uses the Graveyard quite a bit, especially its Immortal Phoenix version. The Virtual World Deck can easily swarm the field to get key cards in that can neutralize the Deck's game plan, as well as deny the Graveyard through Virual World Kyubi - Shenshen.

Sky Strikers

Sky Strikers Deck.png

Despite having a low ATK average, Sky Strikers can easily go up against The Winged Dragon of Ra through their own focus of Spell Card supports, including one that can even steal away the titular Egyptian God card. On top of that, the low monster count on the field for Sky Strikers makes sure the Winged Dragon of Ra player has to use their own monsters for tribute fodder as well.

Tri-Brigade

Pure Tribrigade

All three versions of the Tri-Brigade Deck can go up against this Deck with relative ease, and they can catch their opponent off-guard through surprise Link Summoning of Tri-Brigade Shuraig the Ominous Omen with Tri-Brigade Revolt. It's through this combo that the Winged Dragon of Ra can end up banished and unusable for the rest of the Duel.

Best Cards to Tech Against The Winged Dragon of Ra

Imperial Order
Imperial Order For a Deck focusing on a central Monster, it uses quite a lot of Spell Cards as support. Imperial Order can easily cripple this Deck by denying and negating all Spell Cards so long as this card remains on the field, and the controller can keep paying its 700 Life Points cost every turn.
Skill Drain
Skill Drain As daunting as The Winged Dragon of Ra's various forms are, they are all still Effect Monsters in nature. Skill Drain should deny those monsters the opportunity to activate their key effect. When timed right, you can end up trapping a copy of Winged Dragon of Ra with 0 ATK and DEF, making them a prime target for attacks.
Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring
Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring Quite a lot of the support cards in this Deck search out at least a variation of The Winged Dragon of Ra, may it be its standard version, the Sphere Mode or the Immortal Phoenix. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is the quintessential counter against all search effects, and it is no exception against this Deck.
Rainbow Life
Rainbow Life A cheesey Trap Card to use normally, Rainbow Life can actually work well against The Winged Dragon of Ra, as the monster can have ludicrous ATK power and a single attack after this card is activated can skyrocket your own Life Points, giving you an immense advantage and a chance to come back with a clutch play.
