Deck Evaluation | Archetypes heavy with Flip Effects provide powerful control into a defensive playstyle Extra Deck is highly optional, as most of the Deck's strength lies in Main Deck Subterror has a dedicated hand trap that can negate effects, and will look to recycle it a lot
|
Both Subterror and Krawler archetypes gain their benefits from using Flip Effects to control the field. Compared to other Control Decks, this is somewhat slower, but against unprepared Duelists this can be quite a surprise and a pain to counter.
The two does have some synergy together, with a little help from some World Legacy cards.
These two cards are crucial in any kind of Subterror Deck. Subterror Guru's flip effect searches out any "Subterror" card from the Deck, which is most often used to get Subterror Fiendess.
Subterror Fiendess is essentially a hand trap that negates a card or effect. It also flips a targeted "Subterror" monster back to face-down Defense Position, letting it recharge its Flip Effect.
Subterror Nemesis Defender is another hand trap that counters targeted effects, as it can redirect them to a different appropriate target. Both of them also share the same effect that lets them be Special Summoned, if a face-up monster you control is flipped face-down.
The two Behemoth monsters have pretty potent Flip Effects if triggered. Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric can take control of a Set monster the opponent controls, and Subterror Behemoth Umastryx banishes a monster instead.
Krawler Soma, the newest addition to the "Krawler" archetype, provides so much for Flip Monsters in general, and is a good addition to the Deck. It can Special Summon itself by flipping a monster you control face-down, and can reduce its Level to Special Summon even more "Krawler" monsters immediately face-down.
Each of the "Krawlers" provide their own effects for their Flip Effects. Krawler Axon destroys a Spell/Trap card, Krawler Glial can Special Summon a fellow "Krawler" monster in face-down Defense Position, Krawler Ranvier can recycle monsters from the GY, and Krawler Spine can destroy a monster the opponent controls.
The boss monster among the archetype is Deus X-Krawler, which can negate effects that target this card when face-down. Afterwards, it immediately negates all monsters the opponent currently controls upon effect resolution. When destroyed, it can replace itself with another Level 9 monster.
That monster would be Pot of the Forbidden, with its various effects related to famously banned cards providing chances to further gain advantage, or turn things around.
Both archetypes have their respective Field Spells, and they can be used one after the other to set up the field.
The Hidden City helps you search out a "Subterror" monster, which is usually Subterror Guru. It can also negate attacks by flipping said monsters face-up, thereby also triggering their Flip Effects.
World Legacy Shadow gives "Krawlers" a small stat boost, and the ability to Special Summon them face-down. It also sends a monster that destroys one of your Flip monsters to the Graveyard.
World Legacy Survivor is an excavation search for the "Krawler" archetype. Though, keep in mind: using this Spell Card will lock you into Link Monsters as Special Summons for the rest of the turn.
World Legacy Monstrosity provides power by Special Summoning Level 9 monsters--and there are a couple of them in this Deck.
As for Traps, there's only a handful of them but provide essential synergy to the Deck. Lost Wind can deal with dangerous boss monsters that have Effects, negating them and slashing their ATK by half as well.
World Legacy Pawns can help Set the monsters you control back to face-down Defense Position, and can keep doing in subsequent turns as a Continuous Trap.
The two "Subterror" Traps are crucial in maintaining resources. Subterror Succession refreshes your hand with Flip monsters to keep Setting on the field, while Subterror Final Battle is a dream of a card for Flip Monsters--from switching battle positions to increasing a chosen stat to protect themselves, and "Subterror" effects cannot be negated for the rest of the turn.
Thunder Dragon Colossus can actually be cheated out through Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric due to it being a Thunder-type monster. Naturia Beast is a hard counter against Spell-heavy Decks, so long as it can keep milling cards to trigger its effect.
Cyberse Quantum Dragon provides protection to Link Monsters from attacks, and can bounce monsters they control to launch a second attack. Black Rose Moonlight Dragon can bounce a monster the opponent controls, provided they're Level 5 or higher that was Special Summoned.
Both archetypes' respective Link Monsters are all LINK-2, which makes them easy to summon given this is a Control Deck.
Subterror Behemoth Fiendess gets stronger depending on the Levels of the monsters it used as material, and can Special Summon "Subterror" monsters in face-down Defense Psition.
Each of the X-Krawler Link Monsters provides benefits to fellow "Krawler" monsters it points to such as a stat boost and immunity to battle destruction, which can be hard to give given their Link Markers are pointed left and right. It also boasts a floating effect that Special Summons two "Krawler" monsters from the GY.
X-Krawler Neurogos doubles the battle damage of monsters pointed by its Link Markers, X-Krawler Synaphysis can give them the ability to attack twice, and X-Krawler Qualiark provides more effects the more "Krawler" monsters you control on the field.
If you're running Link Monsters, the Knightmare monsters are always a staple. It never hurts to run Knightmare Cerberus, Knightmare Phoenix, and Knightmare Unicorn in any Deck--and Subterror Krawlers are no exception.
Most of the monsters in this Deck are EARTH Attribute, which is why Missus Radiant is a good option to consider as a LINK-2 for the added stat boost.
Borreload Dragon and Accesscode Talker are LINK-4 Monsters that are overwhelming to deal with, and are often summoned for game-winning plays.
Say you have a hand like this, this is maximizing as many Set monsters on the field as soon as possible. After all, most of the monsters have Flip Effects.
Card(s) on Hand | |
---|---|
Step | Description |
1 | Activate One for One; discard Subterror Behemoth Umastryx, and Special Summon from the Deck Subterror Fiendess. |
2 | Activate the effect of Subterror Fiendess; flip it face-down, and Special Summon in face-down Defense Position Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric. |
3 | Set Krawler Ranvier. |
So long as you have either Terraforming or a copy of The Hidden City, this combo gives you a monster on the field and a free hand trap on hand to negate effects with.
Card(s) Needed | |
---|---|
Step | Description |
1 | Activate Terraforming, and search out a copy of *The Hidden City. |
2 | Activate The Hidden City; upon activation, use its effect, and search out a copy of Subterror Guru from the Deck. |
3 | Set Subterror Guru. Then, activate the second effect of The Hidden City; target Subterror Guru and flip it face-up. In most cases, flip it up in Defense Position. |
4 | Activate Subterror Guru's Flip Effect, and search out a copy of Subterror Fiendess to add to your hand. |
Accesscode Talker | |
---|---|
A classic staple for Decks that can run LINK-3 Monsters like Knightmare Unicorn, Accesscode Talker is a great endgame boss monster to summon, due to its high ATK through its effect and the opponent being unable to respond to its card destruction effect. | |
Deus X-Krawler | |
Deus X-Krawler's effect is unique in that it can flip itself face-up to negate an effect that targeted this card while Set. Then, once it's flipped face-up, it automatically negates the effects of all the opponent's activated monster effects. | |
Borreload Dragon | |
Adding some firepower to the list of Extra Deck monsters is Borreload Dragon. Easier to summon as a LINK-4 just like Accesscode Talker, this card is untargetable by card effects, and has a stat-dropping effect against the opponent's monsters that they cannot respond to. If it attacks, it can take control of it to a Monster Zone pointed to by its Link Markers. | |
Pot of the Forbidden | |
Best when worked in tandem with Deus X-Krawlers effect, Pot of the Forbidden has a plethora of effects that can turn the tide of the Duel using its Flip Effect. From effects that are similar to Pot of Greed, Raigeki, Giant Trunade, and The Forceful Sentry, it has something for any situation. |
Flip Effects are a little slower to trigger their essential effects, compared to a Trap Card-centric Deck like Labrynth Control. Most of the Trap Cards the Deck runs don't even force monsters to be flipped up, thereby completely dodging the Deck's biggest strengths.
Runick Control Decks will try to make sure this Deck doesn't even get to their key cards by banishing as much of your own Deck as possible. Their consant recursion of resources make it incredilby hard to battle against this archetype.
Runick Deck Lists | |
---|---|
Pure Runick | Spright Runick |
Ishizu Runick | Naturia Runick |
Another Trap-centric Deck, Dinomorphia Decks have a way to nullify even Flip Effects through one of their boss monsters having an effect similar to Skill Drain so long as it's meeting certain conditions.
