Thunder Dragon Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Thunder Dragon is an archetype focused on Fusion Summoning, mostly composed of Light and Dark Attribute Thunder type Monsters. They utilized their effects by discarding themselves or when they are sent to the Graveyard or Banished.

Thunder Dragon Colossus Thunder Dragon Titan

The goal is to Fusion Summon Thunder Dragon Colossus and Thunder Dragon Titan onto the field.

Thunder Dragon Colossus greatly limits the actions of your opponent by locking them out from searching cards from the Deck. Most decks nowadays have a lot of Search effects.

Thunder Dragon Titan, each time a Thunder Monster's Effect is triggered, you'll have the option to destroy cards your opponent controls. This is a non-targeting effect, so it can bypass most Monster Immunities. With this effect, you can easily clear boards making it easier to destroy your opponent's life.

Thunder Dragon Thunder Dragonhawk Thunder Dragonroar Thunder Dragondark Thunder Dragonmatrix

Thunder Dragon utilizes its effect to fuel the Graveyard with Light and Thunder Monster while also maintaining card advantage by searching for another copy of itself.

Thunder Dragonhawk and Thunder Dragonroar are currently in the Limited and Semi-Limited respectively and for a good reason. Hawk lets you reshuffle your hand if it was Banished or sent from the field to the GY, decluttering your hand from dead cards. It also has an Effect to Special Summon from the Banish by discarding itself.

Roar on the other hand lets you recycle Thunder Dragons that are Banished or in the Graveyard. Roar also floats once it is banished or sent from the Field to the Graveyard, letting you summon any Thunder Dragon from the Deck.

Thunder Dragondark and Thunder Dragonmatrix serve as your Bullets for Thunder Dragon Titan as they have Quick Effects that discard themselves to search for another copy from the Deck or Increase an Attack.

Core Combos and Interaction

1-Card Colossus

This is a very simple combo in which you can summon Thunder Dragon Colossus.

Required Cards
Gold Sarcophagus
Step Description
1 Activate Gold Sarcophagus from Hand. Banish Thunder Dragondark from the Deck.
2 Activate Thunder Dragondark's effect, searching Thunder Dragonhawk from Deck to Hand.
3 Activate Thunder Dragonhawk's Effect by discarding it to Special Summon Thunder Dragondark from Banish.
4 Since you already activated a Thunder Monster's effect from Hand, Tribute Thunder Dragondark to Special Sumon Thunder Dragon Colossus.

This combo is a little bit harder to pull off since Gold Sarcophagus is currently limited. But there are other options for you to Banish Thunder Dragondark like Allure of Darkness, Aloof Lupine, and sometimes using the Chaos engine makes it easier to Banish cards.

Having Thunder Dragon Colossus on the field pretty much stops your opponent from adding cards from Deck to Hand. This easily shuts down decks that have lots of search effects.

Aloof Lupine

This is a simple combo in which you can summon Thunder Dragon Colossus and Thunder Dragon Titan.

Required Cards
Aloof Lupine + Thunder Dragondark
Step Description
1 Normal Summon Aloof Lupine. Activate its Effect to Banish Thunder Dragondark from Hand and Thunder Dragonroar from the Deck.
2 Activate Thunder Dragondark's effect as Chain Link 1, searching Thunder Dragonhawk from Deck to Hand. Chain Link 2 Thunder Dragonroar's effect to Special Summon Thunder Dragonmatrix from the Deck.
3 Activate Thunder Dragonhawk's effect to Special Summon Thunder Dragonroar from Banish.
4 Since you already activated a Thunder Monster's effect from Hand, Tribute Thunder Dragonroar to Special Sumon Thunder Dragon Colossus in Defense Position.
5 Link Summon Predaplant Verte Anaconda using Thunder Dragonmatrix and Aloof Lupine as materials. Activate Matrix's Graveyard Effect, adding another copy of itself from the Deck to Hand.
6 Activate Verte's Effect, sending Thunder Dragon Fusion from the Deck to Graveyard to Fusion Summon Thunder Dragon Titan in Defense position, returning Dark, Roar, and Matrix to the Deck for the Summon.

Your End Board will look like this:

No Active Field Spell
Predaplant Verte Anaconda X
Thunder Dragon Colossus Thunder Dragon Titan
- - - -

Notes:
In Step 5, you can instead Link Summon I:P Masquerena. Your end board will have no Titan but will have another form of disruption in the form of Knightmare Unicorn.

In Step 6, if you are running the Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer Engine, you can send Fusion Destiny instead.

Chaos Space

Required Cards
Chaos Space + Thunder Dragondark
Step Description
1 Activate Chaos Space, sending Thunder Dragondark to the Graveyard for the cost to Add White Dragon Wyverburster from the Deck to Hand.
2 Special Summon Wyverburster by Banishing Dark from the Graveyard. Activate Dark's effect to add Thunder Dragonhawk from the Deck to hand.
3 Activate Thunder Dragonhawk's effect to Special Summon Thunder Dragondark from Banish.
4 Since you already activated a Thunder Monster's effect from Hand, Tribute Thunder Dragonrdark to Special Sumon Thunder Dragon Colossus in Defense Position.
5 Link Summon Striker Dragon using White Dragon Wyverburster as material. Activate Wyverburster's Graveyard Effect, adding Black Dragon Collapserpent from the Deck to Hand.
6 Special Summon Collapserpent by Banishing Wyverburster from the Graveyard.
7 Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres using Black Dragon Collapserpent and Striker Dragon as materials. Activate Collapserpent's Graveyard Effect, adding the second copy of White Dragon Wyverburster from the Deck to Hand.
8 Activate Chaos Space from the Graveyard by Banishing it to return White Dragon Wyverburster to the Bottom Deck and Draw 1.

Your End Board will look like this:

No Active Field Spell
Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres X
Thunder Dragon Colossus
- - - -

Notes:
In Step 7, similar to the Aloof Lupine Combo, you can opt to I:P Masquerena or still do the Verte Anaconda Combo in which you Summon Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer (If you run the DPE Engine) or the more standard Thunder Dragon Titan.

The advantage of this combo is, you do not use your Normal Summon. Thus, having more room for combo extenders.

Alternative Options

DPE Engine

Destiny HERO - Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer Destiny HERO - Dasher Destiny HERO - Blade Master Fusion Destiny

Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer or more commonly known as the DPE Engine can easily be used in Thunder Dragons as they utilize Fusion Summoning well and they also use Verte Anaconda, making DPE much easier.

Branded Engine

Fallen of Albaz Aluber the Jester of Despia Albion the Shrouded Dragon Branded Fusion Branded in Red Albion the Branded Dragon Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon Lubellion the Searing Dragon

The Branded Engine takes much more Main Deck space compared to the DPE Engine. This offers more line of play and depth to the deck. Branded has High Consistency thanks to Aluber the Jester of Despia and a strong board control with Mirrorjade.

Ishizu P.U.N.K. Engine

Keldo the Sacred Protector Mudora the Sword Oracle Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard Agido the Ancient Sentinel Noh-P.U.N.K. Ze Amin Noh-P.U.N.K. Foxy Tune

The Ishizu P.U.N.K. Engine focuses on the Graveyard effects of cards as well as strong swarming capabilities thanks to their ability to Special Summon multiple monsters in succession.

Similar to the Chaos Engine, the only difference is Ishizu P.U.N.K. Engine can also disrupt the opponent's graveyard.

Bystial Engine

The Bystial Lubellion Bystial Druiswurm Bystial Saronir Bystial Magnamhut Bystial Baldrake

The Bystial cards are commonly used to banish the opponent's cards in their GY. But Thunder Dragons can benefit from this as well, since "Bystial" cards can also banish from your own GY. This makes it easier for the "Thunder Dragon" monsters to activate their effects.

Thunder Dragon Counters: How to Beat

Deck Counters

Drytron

Drytron Fairy Deck.png

The key to beating Thunder Dragon Decks is negating & interrupting their Summons & Card Effect activations.

Going with a deck similar to the Drytron Fairy Control Deck that can control the flow of the Duel may turn things to your favor!

Drytron Fairy Deck List and Card Guide

Eldlich

Eldlich Control
Eldlich the Golden Lord's big Attack points can easily smash Thunder Dragon's boss monsters. It also has a built-in removal that can bypass Colossus' and Titan's Immunity to destruction. Eldlich also has tons of Floodgates at its disposal like Skill Drain and There Can Be Only One.

Best Cards to Tech Against Thunder Dragon

Compulsory Evacuation Device
Compulsory Evacuation Device Any similar cards that do not destroy are hard counters for Thunder Dragon as bouncing, spinning, or sending directly to the Graveyard are not covered in the Immunity effect of Thunder's Boss Monsters.
Artifact Lancea
Artifact Lancea A hand trap that prohibits Banishing cards. If timed correctly, Thunder Dragons will have no way of Activating their effects.
Gnomaterial
Gnomaterial Focusing on Fusion Summoning, getting hit by Gnomaterial will put Thunder Dragon in a tight spot as they cannot send their monsters on the Field to the Graveyard for Fusion or Link Summoning.
Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring
Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring Negating Chaos Space will put Thunder Dragon in an unfavorable spot as they lose 2 cards in hand without getting anything in return.

Non-Targeting Removal and Negations

Using a combination of spells and traps to interrupt your opponent will quickly put the duel in your favor.
Non-targeting removals similar to Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star can hurt the Deck and easily out Colossus and Titan.
Kaijus serve similar roles as well as they can easily stomp over your boss monsters.

Thank you. As a Thunder Dragon player myself, this infuriated me to no end. Read the cards, like damn

1 Anonymousalmost 2 years

this whole combo is incorrect. you can not add specific thunder dragon cards with “thunder dragon” that card can only add up to 2 cards of its specific kind, not roar or dark or even hawk. took long enough for the deck build to even show up and y’all come out with this lol
