Ancient Gear Breakdown

Ancient Gear Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Master Duel - Ancient Gear

Most of the Boss Monsters in an Ancient Gear Deck provide protection from themselves whenever they attack by blocking all Spells and Traps from activating during the Damage Step.

While the Deck is not combo heavy compared to other top-tier meta Decks, the Ancient Gear archetypehas suprisingly easy ways of summoning key monsters, either from the Main Deck or Extra Deck, and some of which have floating effects that can replace itself with equally strong, if not stronger, monsters.

New Ancient Gear Cards

Ancient Gear Statue Ancient Gear Dragon Ancient Gear Tanker Ancient Gear Commander

The newer cards added with the release of the Advance of Great Forces Selection Pack provide additional consistency to the Deck. Ancient Gear Statue is an easy way to get Ancient Gear Golem out on the field, while Ancient Gear Dragon can Normal Summon itself easier, while being a negate against Spell/Trap Cards. Ancient Gear Tanker and Ancient Gear Commander serve as combo extenders with their ability to provide more Normal Summons and Special Summons.

Ancient Gear Dark Golem

Ancient Gear Dark Golem is a new boss monster for the Deck, and takes on the name of the original Ancient Gear Golem while in the field or GY. It nets two Ancient Gear cards on summon, and when it attacks it gets the same effect of the opponent not being able to trigger Spell/Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step.

Ancient Gear Advance Ancient Gear Duel

Ancient Gear Advance is a searcher for an Ancient Gear Spell or Trap Card, which is what is definitely needed to get Ancient Gear Fusion on hand. It also provides a draw after tributing an Ancient Gear monster, and in that same effect the user can Normal Summon Level 5 or higher Ancient Gear monsters without tributes.

Ancient Gear Duel makes Ancient Gear golem and monsters that mention it in their effects immune to activated monster effects, and if it is used to Fusion Summon a monster that mentions Ancient Gear Golem, that Fusion Monster can attack up to three times every Battle Phase.

Core Combos and Interactions

Ancient Gear Sample Combo

Sample Starting Hand
Ancient Gear Wyvern Ancient Gear Statue Ancient Gear Wyvern Ancient Gear Fortress Ancient Gear Advance
1 Activate Ancient Gear Fortress.
Afterwards, Normal Summon one of the Ancient Gear Wyverns on hand. Trigger its effect on Normal Summon, and search out a copy of Ancient Gear Dark Golem.
2 Activate Ancient Gear Advance to search out Ancient Gear Catapult.
Then, activate the second effect of Ancient Gear Advance; tribute Ancient Gear Wyvern on the field to draw a card.
3 Activate Ancient Gear Catapult; destroy Ancient Gear Fortress as cost to Special Summon Ancient Gear Dark Golem from the Deck.
4 Chain Link 2: Trigger the effect of Ancient Gear Fortress after being destroyed; Special Summon the Ancient Gear Statue from the hand.
Chain Link 1: On Special Summon, trigger Ancient Gear Dark Golem's effect; add Geartown and Ancient Gear Fusion from the Deck.
5 Activate Geartown.
Afterwards, activate the effect of Ancient Gear Statue; tribute itself to Special Summon Ancient Gear Tanker from the Deck.
Trigger its effect upon summon; Special Summon the second Ancient Gear Wyvern from the hand.
6 Activate the second effect of Ancient Gear Tanker; destroy Geartown, and boost the ATK of Ancient Gear Golem and monsters that mention it by name.
This triggers Geartown's effect upon being destroyed; Special Summon the second Ancient Gear Dark Golem on hand.
7 Activate Ancient Gear Fusion; using one of the Ancient Gear Dark Golems on the field, and three Ancient Gear monsters from the Deck as materials, Fusion Summon Chaos Ancient Gear Giant.

Boss Monsters

Chaos Ancient Gear Giant
Chaos Ancient Gear Giant The strongest monster in your Deck, Chaos Ancient Gear Giant is your key into pulling off an OTK with Ancient Gears. As long as it's on the field, Monster Effects cannot be activated during the Battle Phase. On top of that, this card can attack all monsters on the opponent's field once, and it deals piercing battle damage to Defense Positioned monsters.
Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem
Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem The second-strongest Monster in this Deck, Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem enjoys having piercing battle damage when it attacks, and it prevents any Spells or Traps from being activated during the Damage Step. Also, it has a floating effect that can bring out "Ancient Gear Golem" while ignoring summoning conditions, and this card itself can be cheated out from its summoning condition through Ancient Gear Megaton Golem.
Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder
Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder Because the Deck has a few options of running Xyz Monsters, even one of them getting to attack enables Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder. This is best used in tandem with the Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Xyz Monsters teched in for some optional firepower in a straightforward combo.

Ancient Gear Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against Ancient Gear

Cyber Dragon

Master Duel - Cyber Dragon

The Cyber Dragons are especially dangerous to an Ancient Gear Deck in fear of a single monster using all Ancient Gear monsters on the field as Fusion Material for Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, or a sneaky tech with Super Polymerization for boss monsters like Cyber Eternity Dragon and Chimeratech Rampage Dragon.

Cyber Dragon Deck List & Card Guide

Yubel

Master Duel - Yubel

If the Ancient Gear Deck is great during the Battle Phase since it stops effects from triggering during the Battle Step, why not go with the Deck that reflects damage back? Yubel is one of the best Decks in the current meta due to how easy they get to bring out their boss monsters. Multiple Yubel monsters alongside a single Nightmare Pain can often be a game-ending situation.

Yubel Deck List & Card Guide

Mikanko

Master Duel - Mikanko Ritual

Much like the Yubel Deck, Mikanko can also reflect back battle damage, but that's only when the Mikanko monsters are equipped with Equip Spells, or they have Ohime the Manifested Mikanko out on the field. The correct set of Mikanko monsters and Spell Cards can make the entire field untargetable and immune to card destruction effects.

Best Cards to Tech Against Ancient Gear

Summon Limit
Summon Limit While the Deck does not go overboard with Special Summons, Summon Limit lets players play safe and restrict all forms of Summoning, which can put a hold to Ancient Gears' combos essential to getting their boss monster out.
Dark Ruler No More
Dark Ruler No More While Dark Ruler No More does prevent any battle damage from being calculated after activation, it is a price well paid to be able to negate monster effects--Ancient Gear Megaton Golem and Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder in particular. Megaton Golem has a floating effect where it can bring out Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem ignoring its summoning conditions, while ZEUS's effect is a Quick Effect that can be activated at any point of the Duel.
Cyber Dragon
Cyber Dragon Cyber Dragon may be an odd choice for a card to tech against Ancient Gears, but they are an unexpected counter nonetheless because of a Fusion Monster associated that has it as Fusion Material: Chimeratech Fortress Dragon. Because of that card's effect, having a Cyber Dragon out against multiple Ancient Gear monsters can result in a Contact Fusion, where the player using Cyber Dragon can use any Machine-type monsters for additional Material--and that includes Ancient Gears.
Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju
Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju Kaijus can tribute the opponent's monsters, and Gamaciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju is often the best Kaiju to send because of it having the lowest ATK among all the Kaijus. This card can bypass the on-leave effect of Megaton Golem because being tributed does not technically count as a card effect.

also using mound of the bound creator further supports chaos giant as well as ultimate ancient geat golem

greater polymerization works effectively well with fusions of 3 or more materials (gains piercing damage and indestructible to card effects). cyber pharos can be handy too. and skill drain combo after chaos giant hits the field makes for an nearly unstoppable combo.
