Ancient Gear Deck Guide: How to Play

Playstyle and Win Condition

Most of the Boss Monsters in an Ancient Gear Deck provide protection from themselves whenever they attack by blocking all Spells and Traps from activating during the Damage Step.

While the Deck is not a combo, the Deck has suprisingly easy ways of summoning key monsters, either from the Main Deck or Extra Deck, and some of which have floating effects that can replace itself with equally strong, if not stronger, monsters.

Core Combos and Interactions

Ancient Gear Basic Combo

With an ideal hand, you can end up being able to swarm the field with quite a number of Ancient Gear monsters, even before being able to conduct a Fusion Summon through Ancient Gear Hunting Hound's effect.

1 Activate Terraforming, search out a copy of Geartown, and activate it immediately after adding it to your hand.
2 Activate Ancient Gear Catapult, and target Geartown to destroy.
3 Chain Urgent Schedule after activating Ancient Gear Catapult.
4 With Urgent Schedule's effect, Special Summon a copy of Ancient Gear Frame and Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon from the Deck. Using Ancient Gear Catapult's effect, Special Summon Ancient Gear Golem from the Deck.
5 When Geartown is destroyed at the end of the effect chain, activate its effect, and Special Summon Ancient Gear Hunting Hound from the Deck.
6 Normal Summon Ancient Gear Wyvern, activate its effect upon summon, and add a copy of Ancient Gear Fortress from the Deck to your Hand.
7 Activate Ancient Gear Fortress.

Rail Cannon into ZEUS

The Train and Rail Cannon monsters are there as a secondary archetype as they have some sort of synergy with Ancient Gears, an archetype that predominantly has EARTH Machine-type monsters. The two cards in the Main Deck make for an effective two-card combo.

1 While you control an EARTH Machine-type Ancient Gear monster, you can Special Summon Super Express Bullet Train.
2 With Super Express Bullet Train being Special Summoned, it will trigger the effect of Heavy Freight Train Derricrane from the hand, and you can Special Summon the card.
3 Using Super Express Bullet Train and Heavy Freight Train Derricrane as material, Xyz Summon Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max.
4 Activate the effect of Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max, detach one Xyz Material from this card, and deal 2000 effect damage to the opponent.
5 Using Gustav Max as the lone Material and carrying over the remaining Xyz Material attached to it, Xyz Summon Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe.
6 You can choose between activating Juggernaut Liebe's first effect, let this card gain 2000 ATK and DEF, and attack once or; go straight into Battle Phase without activating its first effect, and attack up to the number of Materials attached to the card (in this combo, there should be two).
7 Go into Main Phase 2, and use Juggernaut Liebe and its attached material(s) as Xyz Material to Xyz Summon Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder.

Boss Monsters

Chaos Ancient Gear Giant
Chaos Ancient Gear Giant The strongest monster in your Deck, Chaos Ancient Gear Giant is your key into pulling off an OTK with Ancient Gears. As long as it's on the field, Monster Effects cannot be activated during the Battle Phase. On top of that, this card can attack all monsters on the opponent's field once, and it deals piercing battle damage to Defense Positioned monsters.
Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem
Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem The second-strongest Monster in this Deck, Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem enjoys having piercing battle damage when it attacks, and it prevents any Spells or Traps from being activated during the Damage Step. Also, it has a floating effect that can bring out "Ancient Gear Golem" while ignoring summoning conditions, and this card itself can be cheated out from its summoning condition through Ancient Gear Megaton Golem.
Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder
Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder Because the Deck has a few options of running Xyz Monsters, even one of them getting to attack enables Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder. This is best used in tandem with the Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Xyz Monsters teched in for some optional firepower in a straightforward combo.
Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max
Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max There are a number of Level 10 "Train" monsters that are easy to summon to enable Superdreadnought Rail Cannons, and Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max is a good entry point. As soon as this card is summoned, detaching an Xyz Material from it burns the opponent for 2000 damage, then can be Ranked Up into Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe afterwards.

Budget Ancient Gear: F2P Friendly

Lower Rarity Replacements

SR/UR Replacements
Ancient Gear Fusion Ancient Gear Fusion Power Bond Power Bond Polymerization Polymerization
Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon Ancient Gear Ancient Gear Ancient Gear Soldier Ancient Gear Soldier

・While Ancient Gear Fusion is the go-to Fusion Spell for this Deck, you can make do with Power Bond and even simply Polymerization to conduct Fusion Summons. Power Bond in particular doubles the ATK of the Machine-type Fusion Monster you bring out, making it a prime alternative candidate for an OTK.

Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon is a very key monster for the Deck, but should it be too expensive to afford or you have no Rank 9 Xyz Monsters in your Extra Deck, other Ancient Gear monsters can provide different options. Ancient Gear Soldier is a low-rarity monster that blocks and Spells or Traps from activating while it attacks, while Ancient Gear provides a quick Special Summon and lets you have easy materials for a Link Summon to Ancient Gear Ballista.

Ancient Gear Counters: How to Beat

Best Decks to Use Against Ancient Gear

D/D/D

This Deck is especially dangerous if it goes first and you do not have a hand trap at hand. Once they manage to set up their field with monsters with effect-negating abilities like D/D/D Cursed King Siegfried, D/D/D Wave Oblivion King Caesar Ragnarok and Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon, it will be hard for Ancient Gears to use their key Spell Cards to start their combo.

Virtual World

Virutal World Kyubi - Shenshen alone disrupts even the Ancient Gears' basic combos by banishing cards meant to be sent to the Graveyard. Other than the key Boss Monster, Virtual World Decks being able to manage their resources well can be overwhelming to deal with.

Eldlich Control

There are a number of monsters in the Ancient Gear's Deck and Extra Deck that can go up against Eldlich the Golden Lord just with raw power (even with the latter's ATK boost effect), but with the number of disruptions and floodgates an Eldlich Control Deck has, it can be very difficult to pressure the opponent.

Drytron

Drytron is currently the best Deck in the game, combining unparalleled control with heavy hitters like Drytron Meteonis Draconids and Herald of Ultimateness. The best shot Ancient Gears has to deal with Drytron is to go first and bring out Chaos Ancient Gear Giant or Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem before they can bring out their respective boss monsters.

Cyber Dragons

The Cyber Dragons are especially dangerous to an Ancient Gears Deck in fear of a single monster using all Ancient Gear monsters on the field as Fusion Material for Chimeratech Fortress Dragon. Not only that, Cyber Dragons can make use of Power Bond for an insanely powerful Fusion Monster like Cyber End Dragon, or Cyber Dragon Infinity to mess with effects.

Best Cards to Tech Against Ancient Gear

Summon Limit
Summon Limit While the Deck does not go overboard with Special Summons, Summon Limit lets players play safe and restrict all forms of Summoning, which can put a hold to Ancient Gears' combos essential to getting their boss monster out.
Dark Ruler No More
Dark Ruler No More While Dark Ruler No More does prevent any battle damage from being calculated after activation, it is a price well paid to be able to negate monster effects--Ancient Gear Megaton Golem and Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder in particular. Megaton Golem has a floating effect where it can bring out Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem ignoring its summoning conditions, while ZEUS's effect is a Quick Effect that can be activated at any point of the Duel.
Cyber Dragon
Cyber Dragon Cyber Dragon may be an odd choice for a card to tech against Ancient Gears, but they are an unexpected counter nonetheless because of a Fusion Monster associated that has it as Fusion Material: Chimeratech Fortress Dragon. Because of that card's effect, having a Cyber Dragon out against multiple Ancient Gear monsters can result in a Contact Fusion, where the player using Cyber Dragon can use any Machine-type monsters for additional Material--and that includes Ancient Gears.
Gamaciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju
Currently Unavailable Kaijus can tribute the opponent's monsters, and Gamaciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju is often the best Kaiju to send because of it having the lowest ATK among all the Kaijus. This card can bypass the on-leave effect of Megaton Golem because being tributed does not technically count as a card effect.

also using mound of the bound creator further supports chaos giant as well as ultimate ancient geat golem

greater polymerization works effectively well with fusions of 3 or more materials (gains piercing damage and indestructible to card effects). cyber pharos can be handy too. and skill drain combo after chaos giant hits the field makes for an nearly unstoppable combo.
