Best Wand Core

Mostly An Aesthetic Choice

Wand Cores are mostly an aesthetic choice, as the spell casting and battle mechanics rely more on your reflexes and the number of spells and talents that you've unlocked.

You can pick any from the 3 main wand cores: Dragon Heartstring, Unicorn Hair, and Phoenix Feather.

Do Wand Cores Matter?

No, Since Wand Cores Do Not Effect Your Wand

Hogwarts Legacy - Ollivander

The Wand Core that you choose does not matter as it does not affect your wand and spells in any way. The same goes for other wand customizations, as its purely based on your aesthetic and the wood types, color, or wand handle do not matter.

Any Wand Core will allow you to unlock all the spells in the game, so don't worry about being locked out of your full potential by the choice you make here. There is currently no evidence that Wand Core affects gameplay.

List of Wand Cores

Wand Core In-Game Description / Lore
Dragon Heartstring Dragon heartstring that serves as the core of a wand, known for producing powerful magic
Wands made from Dragon cores are easier to adapt and learn than others. Dragon Heartstrings are described to be the most powerful yet the easiest core to turn to the Dark Arts.
Unicorn Hair The hair of a unicorn that serves as the core of a wand, known for producing consistent magic
Although not the most powerful core for wands, Unicorn cores are least prone to mishaps when casting spells. The literal opposite of Dragon cores, wands imbued with Unicorn Tail hair are described to be also the least likely to turn to the Dark Arts.
Phoenix Feather The feather of a phoenix that serves as the core of a wand, known for producing a great range of magic
Phoenix cores are capable of producing a great range of magic. One of the most rare Wand Cores, Phoenix Feathers are described to be the hardest to turn docile and the most difficult to secure loyalty.

As noted above, the in-game descriptions for the Wand Cores emphasize certain aspects, but these do not have an impact on gameplay, so feel free to choose whichever Wand Core you like.

The lore descriptions for the Wand Cores above are based on information from the official Wizarding World website, and as the information is not cited directly in the game. These also do not directly affect gameplay.

What are Wand Cores?

Conductor of Magical Energy in a Wand

Hogwarts Legacy - Instruments that Help Channel a Wizard

A wand core is the magical substance which allows a wand to channel the magical energy of a witch or wizard.

Although a variety of substances can be used, such as the Thestral Mane in the Elder Wand in the Harry Potter books, Garrick Ollivander spearheaded the practice of only using three Supreme Cores, the Dragon Heartstring, Unicorn Hair, and Phoenix Feather cores, to produce high-quality wands.
