The Lost Astrolabe side quest becomes available upon your first visit to Lower Hogsfield.

The Lost Astrolabe Walkthrough

Objectives
1 Talk to Grace Pinch-Smedley.
Grace is located on the dock, looking in the northeast direction over the Black Lake.
2 Dive in the Black Lake and find the astrolabe.
From the dock, jump into the lake and swim northeast until you reach the purple circle area denoted on your minimap.

You don't actually need to dive into the Black Lake. Just jump in and swim to the ripples in the purple search area.
3 Return to Grace.
Swim back to Grace at the dock to finish the quest.

2. Dive in the Black Lake and Find the Astrolabe

The astrolabe is located in northwesternmost ripple, among the 5 ripples found within the purple search area denoted on the minimap. Search the ripple in the lake to dive in and retrieve it.

Searching each ripple gives you a Gear item, so be sure to check all 5 before you head back to Grace.

Ask for Gold at the End

Hogwarts Legacy Lost Astrolabe Reward

Asking for gold in the dialogue options at the end of the quest will net you a 20 Gold bonus, with no repercussions.
