Combat Guide: How to Fight

Learning to defend and attack with spells is every Wizard and Witch's bread and butter, even in Hogwarts Legacy! Read on to learn more about combat

How Does Combat Work?

Attacking

When fighting various enemies. You'll often need to keep on the offensive, slinging spells and items at them!

By tapping R2/RT to fling a basic attack their way, you can quickly build up for devastating combos!

Using Spells

When fighting enemies, you'll need to assign spells into your Spell Diamond. You can see this at the bottom right side of your screen.

These 4 spells are accessed by holding R2/RT and selecting the corresponding button for each spell! As you progress, this will increase to up to 16 different stored spells.

Defending Against Spells

When being attacked by enemies, you can deflect these attacks by using triangle or Y to cast Protego when a halo appears around your head. Blocking spells negates their effects and damage!

Alternatively, you can also block the attack and launch a counterattack by holding triangle or Y instead! This can potentially Stupefy your opponent and damage them in the process.

Dodging

Despite your prowess in blocking spells, there are a few that cannot be blocked or counterattacked. When you see the halo above your head turn red, you'll need to dodge the attack instead by pressing O or B.

Shields

Enemies may be protected by different types of shields. These shields can only be broken by spells that match their color!

Ancient Magic

Ancient magic is represented by the swirling magical flame you may have noticed on the Hogwarts Legacy logo! This ancient magic is represented by a meter that fills as you perform Combos.

Performing x10 Combos will fill the bar, and once it's full the prompt to press both L1/LB and R1/RB will appear. This will trigger a powerful attack using Ancient Magic.

Note that by using the power, it will empty the bar and it will need to be refilled to use it again.

What are Ancient Magic Spells?

Ways to Recharge Ancient Magic

Enemies will drop orbs that can be used to fill the Ancient Magic Bar! These will slowly refill the bar, along with potions that can be brewed and consumed!

Targeting Enemies

When you wish to target a specific enemy, press R3 to lock onto a target and use the right stick to change targets.

Stealth

In addition to regular combat, players can take a more subtle approach by sneaking their way through the battlefield. Using the Disillusionment Charm, players can blend with their surroundings.

By sneaking around the battlefield, players can use Petrificus Totalus to knock out their enemies by pressing X or Square!

Tool Wheel

The Tool Wheel contains all items such as Potions, Plants, Bomb,s and the like! The menu can be accessed by tapping L1 to access the item in the quick slot.

These different items can make the difference between life and death in combat so be sure to equip what you need!

Where to Practice Combat

Arenas

There are 3 Arenas so far in Hogwarts Legacy. Two are available for all players, and the last one is the Dark Arts Battle Arena! This is only accessible to those with the Dark Arts Pack or the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Regular Arenas contain challenges for players to complete! Meanwhile, the Dark Arts Battle Arena allows you to fight enemies using the Unforgivable Curses: Avada Kedavra, Crucio, and Imperio. These curses can break through any Shield Charms.

Dueling

After learning about dueling at the Crossed Wands Club, you'll have the chance to join in some duels and earn Dueling Feats.

These duels are a great way to expand your skills and grow into your abilities!
