I'm afraid he's dead. You tell Claire that Bardolph turned into an Inferius and that you had to kill him.
He's decided to pursue a new life. You tell Claire that Bardolph joined the Ashwinders.

The choice occurs at the end of the quest Brother's Keeper, but it doesn't affect the ending nor the rewards received.

You can choose either option, because whether you tell Claire the truth or lie, both choices result in Claire being devastated at the news you bring her.
