Guard Against Incoming Spells

Hogwarts Legacy - How to Use Protego
Protego allows you to guard against incoming attacks from enemies. Pressing the guard button at the right time will successfully deflect the spell back towards the enemy.

Press the guard button when the halo appears

Hogwarts Legacy - Guard against spells
When an enemy is about to attack, a yellow halo appears over your character's head. Press the guard button when this happens to deflect the spell back towards the enemy.

If you want to counterattack after deflecting, you can press and hold the guard button to follow up with a spell such as Stupefy to stun the enemy.

How to Get and Learn Protego

Learned in Vault 12

Unlock Protego as you progress in the The Path to Hogwarts quest. You'll be fighting statues in Vault 12.
