Tips for Beginners

Set the Difficulty in the Settings

There are four difficulty options to choose from the Settings menu. These include: Story, Easy, Normal, and Hard.

For first-time players, choosing Story Difficulty lets you progress the game without worrying over the combat and puzzle difficulty. This mode slows down the combat and you take less damage from enemies. In addition, puzzles are not time sensitive and you cannot fail minigames that require precise movement.

How to Change Difficulty

Change Accessibility Options

Hogwarts Legacy offers several accessibilty options that you can tweak to suit your gameplay needs. These include text-to-speech options, colorblind modes, subtitles, and language options.

Accessibility Options Guide

Choose Your Hogwarts House

Hogwarts Legacy - Sorting Hat Ceremony

You'll be able to choose between Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff houses at the beginning of the game. This will be your permanent home for the rest of your Hogwarts journey. Each house has its own common room and a companion that you can befriend!

While you wait for the game to release, take our Hogwarts House Quiz to find out where you belong!

Best House to Choose

Learn the Basics of Combat

First and foremost, you'll want to get a good handle on your wand and make sure to get the basics of spellcasting down pat if you're going to take on Trolls, Goblins, and the rest of the baddies the game throws at you. Visit Lucan Brattleby, leader of the Crossed Wands Dueling Club, if you want to practice casting spells on a dummy.

Combat Guide: How to Fight

Spells Have Cooldown Periods

Casting spells is the bread and butter of any formidable witch or wizard, but in Hogwarts Legacy, this comes at a cost. Once you cast a spell, it will enter a cooldown phase in which you cannot use it again for a short period of time. You can tell a spell is on cooldown by looking in the bottom right corner of the screen - if the spell's icon is filling up, it's still on cooldown and out of commission momentarily.

Learn how long each spell takes to finish cooling down so you can pace yourself in combat. The length of the cooldown varies from spell to spell - the more powerful the spell, the longer the cooldown. Make sure you aren't relying solely on one spell so you don't get stuck in cooldown! You might even try brewing some Focus Potions in advance to shorten the cooldown period of your best spells.

Target Specific Enemies in Group Battles

You won't always have the luxury of taking enemies on one at a time. It may not seem fair, but you should come prepared in case you have to take on groups of enemies. You can manage these fights better by targeting enemies and picking them off one at a time. The top of the screen will indicate the name and health bar of the enemy you're currently targeting.

List of Enemies

A Halo Indicates an Incoming Attack

Look out for a halo around your character's head - this means an attack is headed your way! You can deflect spells with a button press, or hold the button to send a Stupefy counterattack!

Note that not all attacks can be deflected. Watch out for the red halo as this indicates an unblockable attack! Dodge to avoid these attacks whenever they appear.

Listen to Gossip from Students

You can find some students talking to each other in areas around Hogwarts Castle. Listen to their conversations as you can learn useful information or lore regarding the story.

Spam Revelio Everywhere

As you roam around Hogwarts Castle, you'll find that Revelio will quickly become your best friend, revealing various items and interactable objects as you explore!

For example, you can uncover and obtain Field Guide Pages when you cast Revelio at certain objects.

In addition, once you reveal these interactable objects, you can test various spells to try and unlock their secrets!

Follow the Yellow Shiny Trail to Reach the Quest Location

When setting an active Quest, you may notice a yellow shiny trail that leads you to its destination. This allows you to reach the quest location without getting lost inside Hogwarts.

You can also check the trail in the form of breadcrumbs on your minimap.

The Gear you find and equip in Hogwarts Legacy will offer a basic stat increase to your offense or defense, but to truly take advantage of the benefits and increase their combat power, you'll need to upgrade Gear using the Loom in the Room of Requirement. You can upgrade a secondary stat or add Traits to your Gear if you have the correct upgrade materials.
