How to Unlock A Thief in the Night and Location

During Search for the Final Keeper

You unlock Take the Biscuit by completing the second part of the Prepare for your Search for the Final Keeper task, which includes the quests In the Shadow of the Estate and The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom.

A Thief in the Night Walkthrough

Objectives
1 Speak with the Irondale vendor.
Talk to Padraic Haggarty at his shop west of the Irondale Floo Flame fast travel point.
2 Return to the scene in Irondale at night.
Via the map, wait in the area until nighttime. The rest of the quest can only take place at night.

Look for clues at the scene.
Use Revelio at the shop to reveal a pile of gold headed west out of Irondale.

Follow the trail of coins.
Follow the trail of coins, collecting them on the way and using Revelio to highlight them when you lose track of them.

A Thief in the Night Step 5
Capture the thief.
The thief is a Niffler beast. You can capture it with the nab-sack. Since it's already sleeping, best to sneak up on it without waking it up.
5a Make sure to also get the Haggarty Family Heirloom, located above the mouth of the den. You can return it to Padraic for Gold.
6 Return to Padraic Haggarty.
Fast travel back to Irondale and speak to Padraic to complete the quest.

4. Follow the Trail of Coins

Video Guide

The trail of coins will lead you west to a Loyalist camp. This is not the final location, as the trail continues past the camp and further west through the jagged cliffside. Best to sneak past the enemies at the camp (and avoid attacking them) if you're collecting the coins.

Continue following the trail west, past another Loyalist camp (although the trail doesn't enter this one), to the final destination: the Niffler Den.

You Don't Need to Collect All the Coins on the Trail

Following the train of coins and collecting the coins are actually optional. You can head straight to the Niffler Den and the quest will continue like normal.
