How to Solve the Lockpicking Puzzle

Rotate the Outer and Inner Gears to Unlock the Door

The key to solving the Lockpicking Puzzle is to find the correct orientation of the outer and inner gears.

Control the green and red sparks to rotate the outer and inner gears until the gears at the bottom-right corner and center of the puzzle starts spinning on its own. Hold the sparks in place to unlock the door and solve the puzzle.

How to Solve the Lockpicking Puzzle

Use the Left Thumbstick to control the green spark and rotate the outer gears. Check the green gear on the bottom-right corner to see if it starts spinning. The spinning gears indicate that you have solved the outer gear's puzzle.

Use the Right Thumbstick to control the red spark and rotate the inner gears. Check the red gear at the center of the puzzle to see if it starts spinning. The spinning gears indicate that you have solved the inner gear's puzzle.

Hold both the Left Thumbstick and Right Thumbstick in the correct orientation so that both the green and red gears start spinning at the same time. Wait for the lock to open to indicate that you have successfuly solved the lockpicking puzzle.

You can start unlocking locked doors once you learn the Alohomora spell. You will learn the spell from Gladwin Moon as part of The Caretaker's Lunar Lament main story quest.

How to Unlock Level 2 and Level 3 Locks

Collect 9 Demiguise Statues to Unlock Level 2 Locks

Hogwarts Legacy - Percival Rackham Trial

You need to collect 9 Demiguise Statues to upgrade the Alohomora spell in order to unlock Level 2 Locks.

You can start collecting the statues after completing Percival Rackham's Trial and once you start The Man Behind the Moons side quest.

Collect 13 Demiguise Statues to Unlock Level 3 Locks

Hogwarts Legacy - Demiguise Statue 1

Much like unlocking Level 2 Locks, you need to collect 13 Demiguise Statues to upgrade the Alohomora spell once more to unlock Level 3 Locks. Collecting 13 of the Demiguise Statues also allows you to progress and complete The Man Behind the Moons side quest.

The Solution is Always in a Cardinal Direction

Hogwarts Legacy - The Solution is Always in a Cardinal Direction

The eight cardinal directions represented by the green and red circles. Rotate the gears at these directions to find the correct puzzle solution.

No matter the level, the solution will ways be in one of the 8 cardinal directions! So if you're feeling a little lost, just keep trying to align them in that direction to solve the puzzle!

Rotate the Gears One at a Time

The lockpicking puzzle has no time limit, so you can take your time and rotate the gears one at a time.

This allows you to focus on figuring out the correct direction of the gears first before holding the Left and Right Thumbsticks together to solve the puzzle.

Switch to Story Difficulty to Auto Solve the Puzzle

If you do not want to solve the lockpicking puzzle on your own, you can switch the difficulty to Story to use the Auto Solve option for the game to solve the puzzle for you.

Go to the Settings menu and navigate to the Gameplay Options tab. Change the Difficulty option to Story to enable the Auto Solve option during the lockpicking puzzle.
