Hogwarts Legacy has numerous terms that can cause unfamiliar players to feel lost. Read on for a list of commonly used terms that will help your in-game experience.

These are terms used not just at Hogwarts but all over the wizarding world.
Term | Meaning |
---|---|
Muggle | A person that does not have magical powers. |
Wand | A stick or rod made of a certain wood that is used by wizards and witches to channel their magic. |
Spells | Words or incantations used to conjure magic. |
Charms | Spells that change what an object does. |
Patronus | A defensive charm that, when successfully cast, takes the form of an animal. This spell is the only effective defense against Dementors. |
Dark Arts | Any type of magic used to cause harm against other witches and wizards or creatures. |
Floo Flames | Green flames that are used to travel from one point to another in different areas of the Wizarding World. |
Floo Powder | Used in fireplaces to access the floo network. |
Knut | A bronze coin that is the smallest form of wizarding currency. |
Sickle | A silver coin used in wizarding currency. |
Galleon | These are gold coins that hold the most value in terms of wizarding currency. |
Animagus | A witch or wizard who can transform into an animal and back again. |
Inferius | A corpse that has been reanimated by a Dark wizard’s curse. The plural form of this term is Inferi. |
Dementor | Creatures that guard the Wizard prison, Azkaban. These are one of the darkest creatures that feed on happiness and human souls. |
House Elf | Creatures that work under the employ of Hogwarts. They normally perform mundane tasks like cleaning and cooking. |
Ministry of Magic | The government of the wizarding world. |
Department of Mysteries | A department in the Ministry of Magic that executes confidential research. |
Auror | A witch or wizard that works as a highly trained law enforcement official that focuses on high-risk threats. |
Devil's Snare | A wicked plant that will strangle or wrap around anything it comes in contact with, but hates sunlight. |
Daily Prophet | The official newspaper of the Wizarding World. |
Unforgivable Curses | Spells that have been considered the worst spells any witch or wizard can cast. These are the Cruciatus Curse, Imperius Curse, and the Killing Curse. |
Apparition/Disapparate/ Apparate/Splinching |
Apparition is a means of teleporting from one space to another and is a common way to get around. Disapparate is to teleport away and Apparate is to teleport into a space. Meanwhile, Splinching is what happens when Apparation goes wrong, usually involving the loss of limbs, etc. |
Deathly Hallows | Three powerful objects said to be created by death. They are the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. |
Squib | A person born from magical parents but possess no magic. |
Goblin | A small, magical, humanoid being similar to an elf. |
Portkey | An item used for teleportation once touched, like Floo Flames; usually disguised as an everyday item. |
Pureblood | A person born from two magical parents. |
Halfblood | A person born from one magical parent and one muggle. |
Muggle-born | A witch or wizard born from two non-magical parents. |
These are terms that you are more likely to hear in Hogwarts or in the general vicinity of the campus.

Quidditch | A wizard sport that involves players flying on broomsticks where they try to score points through hoops. |
Hogwarts House | A community which a student will stay with during their stay at Hogwarts. |
Moonstones | In-game resources or currencies used for Conjurations in the Room of Requirement. |
Talents | Abilities that can upgrade your spells, plants, and potions to improve their effectiveness in the game. |
Wizard's Duel/Dueling | A practice where witches and wizards will engage in duels and combat with one another, using only spells. |
Crossed Wands | An invitation-only dueling club in Hogwarts. |
Prefect | These are students who roam the halls and help maintain order in Hogwarts as decreed by their Head of House or the Headmaster/Headmistress. |
Head Boy and Girl | These students are 2 students chosen by the Headmaster/Headmistress to lead the student body. Only a 7th year student can be a Head Boy or Girl. |
Head of House | This is the professor assigned to manage and watch over the different houses in Hogwarts. They were normally from the same House when they were students. |
Butterbeer | A popular drink in Hogsmeade. |
Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus | Words found on the Hogwarts crest that mean: Never Tickle A Sleeping Dragon |
Headless Hunt | A society of headless ghosts in Hogwarts that Nearly Headless Nick wishes to join. |
Mandrake | A creature whose cry can incapacitate and put others to sleep when unearthed. |
House Points | Points given to or taken based on the performance of students in a House. |
House Cup | An award given to the house with the highest number of House Points at the end of the school year. |
Potions | A bottled mixture of brewed ingredients that inflicts effects on the person when drunk. |
The Sorting Hat | A magical hat that determines the house of new students which they belong to the most. |
Restricted Section | A section in the Hogwarts Library that allows entry only to permitted students. |
Room of Requirement | A room at Hogwarts that appears to those who are in need; provides them with things they currently need. |
