To unlock the side quest Portrait in a Pickle, you need to complete the main quest In the Shadow of the Mountain first.

Additionally, you need to have the second level of Alohomora unlocked to progress through this quest. You can get level 2 by collecting 9 Demiguise Statues.

| 1 | Speak to the portrait in the back of the library. Talk to the painting named Ferdinand Octavius Pratt south of the Library Floo Flame fast travel point. |
| 2 |  Talk to Astoria Crickett at the Three Broomsticks. Astoria is a Ravenclaw student found in the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. |
| 3 |  Find the ruins where Ferdinand's other frame is being held. Head south to Marunweem Lake via fast travel or broom. The destination to investigate is Marunweem Ruins. |
| 4 |  Find and speak with Ferdinand in the ruins. Land on the north side and turn invisible. Sneak towards the stairs to the basement (behind the rack of barrels) and follow the path until you reach a Level 2 lock. Use Alohomora to open it. ▶︎ How to Pick Locks and Unlock Doors |
| 5a |  Burn Ferdinand's alternate frame. Use Incendio on Ferdinand's painting after selecting the dialogue options Returning you to the Three Broomsticks isn't my only option and I could burn you. ▶︎ Should You Burn Ferdinand’s Frame? |
| 5b |  Take Ferdinand's frame to the Three Broomsticks or the Hog's Head Inn. If you don't burn Ferdinand's frame, fast travel back to Hogsmeade and place Ferdinand's frame at either establishment to complete the quest. |

Completing any of the above options will reward you with the Oddities Shelf conjuration no matter what, so feel free to select any.
Bringing Ferdinand to the Three Broomsticks will make him happy, while bringing him to the Hog's Head will make him angry. Burning his painting is the fastest way to finish the quest from that point.
