The main story and world building has proven to be excellent in Hogwarts Legacy. It satisfies long-time fans with new content while staying true and consistent to its source materials, which includes both the books and movies.
It also accommodates players who are unfamiliar with the series and lore by inserting different ways to give them context on the Wizarding World, like through dialogue options where you can ask characters to explain magical terms.
Hogwarts Legacy revolves mainly around you, the protagonist, and your connection to Ancient Magic. There is also the threat of a potential Goblin Rebellion, and the fact that you are starting as a new student in Hogwarts. There is a lot to explore both in the world, and in the story. Players who enjoy immersive, story-driven games will surely be impressed with this one.
Some have commented that the graphics in Hogwarts Legacy may look outdated for a PS5 game, but the details and designs in-game really make up for it.
The architecture and rendering of Hogwarts Castle is truly impressive, as it was able to not only replicate every room from the movies, but also included details from the books that were left out of the big screen.
Exploring outside the castle has also proven to immerse players with detailed locations such as the smaller towns and natural landscaping.
Interactive Map and List of All Locations
There are mixed feelings for the gameplay and battle system of Hogwarts Legacy. The combat movements are fluid and smooth, and spell combos are creatively well adapted into the game from the books and movies.
Although, the aiming mechanics can be hard to manage without fixing the settings to lock aim. The spell sets can also be difficult to navigate unless you use a controller. However, once you get used to it, casting spells becomes natural to you.
Some players may also feel motion sickness with the camera work and the lack of the option to zoom out your camera while exploring, as well as while riding a broom or mount.
Spell List: How to Get All Spells
In terms of character design, majority of Hogwarts Legacy characters are interesting and likeable. Visually, each of the main characters look unique in their own way while maintaining the same magical touch in their appearance. In terms of their backgrounds, majority of the main characters are memorable and likeable.
Some side quests even outshine the main story by getting to work with other characters and companions. Here you get to learn about their stories and unique perspectives of how they perceive magic and the Wizarding World, which adds to the immersion and world building.
Though character expressions and faces may look blank or soulless, and some NPC dialogue can be repetitive, the overall character designs of the game is great.
Majority of the user experience has been pleasant for most players so far, although there have been numerous performance issues for those who play on the PC including slow frame rates and lag.
The load time is decent, and the mechanics of the game is straightforward and easy to remember. Accessibility and difficulty options accomodate for a variety of players, including those playing video games for the first time.
There are also a few bugs that happen, especially when you fast travel or leave the game on for too long. In addition, though the Hogwarts architecture and details are impressive, its 3D map can be difficult and frustrating to navigate.
Despite its shortcomings and some unrelated controversies regarding the Harry Potter author, Hogwarts Legacy has proven itself as a game and has risen up to the hype it built before its release.
Hogwarts Legacy offers players an interesting and mysterious storyline, a mix of likable characters, and an intriguing world to explore. Looking at the game alone, we can definitely say that Hogwarts Legacy is worth playing.
