How to Solve Light and Darkness Puzzle
Insert the Scholar's Moonstone in the Pedestal
To start the "light and darkness" puzzle, insert the Scholar's Moonstone in the pedestal in the middle of the puzzle circle.
Once you activate the pedestal, the orbs at the top of the pillars will shine a light on the pedestal. The pedestal will then cast a long shadow which will cause the symbols on the ground to light up if it connects into one.
Play Through Poppy Sweeting's Questline
If you do not have the item in question, chances are you encountered this puzzle without the A Bird in the Hand side quest. You will not be able to do anything as the Scholar's Moonstone is obtained during the side quest, which is part of Poppy Sweeting's questline.
A Bird in the Hand Walkthrough
Drag the Pillars with Accio
Puzzle Solution
Move the inner pillar using Accio towards the bottom half of the puzzle circle until the pedestal casts a shadow at the snowflake symbol on the ground. Next, move the outer pillar towards the top half of the bottom circle, near the door, until the pedestal casts a shadow at the circle symbol (with a dot in the middle) on the ground.
If you do this correctly, the symbols will light up and the door will open, and you can continue progressing through the quest.
Light and Darkness Tip
If you're stuck with the puzzle, your character will keep mentioning that the puzzle might have something to do with light and darkness, suggesting the fact that you need to use the pedestal's shadow to solve the puzzle.
Puzzle Explanation
To solve the puzzle, you need to mimic the engravings on the door with the use of the pillars and the pedestal's casted shadows from the light. The dark bars stretching out from the circle to the symbols indicate the shadows cast by the pedestal.

Light and Darkness Puzzle Location
Southwest of Brocburrow Floo Flame
The "light and darkness puzzle" in A Bird in the Hand is located southwest of the Brocburrow Floo Flame at the Hogwarts Valley region. It is located near a spider lair, so it is recommended to get rid of the spiders first before doing the puzzle, as they may attack while you are solving it.
Take note that you will not be able to solve the puzzle outside of the A Bird in the Hand side quest.
