How to Unlock A Friend in Deed and Location

During Search for the Final Keeper

You unlock A Friend in Deed by completing the first third of the Prepare for your Search for the Final Keeper task, meaning you have to complete the main quests The Helm of Urtkot, Beasts Class, and The Caretaker's Lunar Lament.

A Friend in Deed Walkthrough

Objectives

A Friend in Deed Step 1
Talk to Sirona Ryan in the Three Broomsticks.
Sirona works inside the Three Broomsticks.

A Friend in Deed Step 2
Speak to Dorothy Sprottle in Upper Hogsfield.
Fast travel or use your broom from a flying area to get to Upper Hogsfield quick. Mrs. Sprottle is outside her house.

Find and enter the cavern.
The cavern to go to is Horklump Hollow, found southwest of Mrs. Sprottle. You can use your broom to get to it rather quickly.

Gather Horklumps (1)
If you didn't give Mrs. Sprottle Horklumps the first time you spoke with her, then you can collect Horklump Juice all around the cavern. They're the purple mushrooms.

Collect Sirona's Letters (5) / Collect Sirona's letter box.
Keep going straight through the cave (any diverging path is just a single room with gear/gold) until you fall into the pit with the Mountain Troll. Defeat it.

Head through the doorway in the south and keep following the path until you cross a bridge and duck under rubble. Here, you can Pick Up Sirona's letters and letter box.

Return the box of letters to Sirona.
Take the nearby exit to the Forbidden Forest then fast travel/use your broom to head to Hogsmeade, where Sirona can still be found at the Three Broomsticks. Talk to her to complete the quest.

A Friend in Deed Tips and Strategies

Use Ancient Magic on Mountain Troll

To defeat the Mountain Troll, simply dodge its attacks and use Ancient Magic to throw nearby items at it. This does more damage than basic attacks. You can even throw boulders it throws at you back at it.
