You can find several old maps on Sky Islands, specifically on obscure areas that are hard to reach. Most old maps will be in chests overridden with vines, so make sure you have something to cut them to access these chests.
Defeating mini-bosses will sometimes drop old maps as well, even if you haven't unlocked the Depths yet. This is the best way to get old maps early in the game as most of these maps are difficult to find elsewhere. Once you've unlocked the Depths, the yellow X marks will be automatically added.

After obtaining an old map, a new mark will be automatically added to your map. This new yellow X mark will serve as your guide to finding these hidden treasures.
Old Maps will sometimes let you find more than one hidden item. After locating the initial treasure from your first X mark, you will get another notification about another one. These additional treasures will also be in the Depths, so be sure to bring a lot of torches to easily explore the area.
