Use Handgun and Rifle During Mayhem Mode

Landing headshots during Mayhem Mode gives you a lot of points depending on how many bars you have filled up! Use your SG-09 R to get 5,000 or your Stingray to get 8,000 with each headshot. This will allow you to maximize the score that you get while using Mayhem. Using the Riot Gun while in Mayhem mode does not give Headshot Kill Bonus.
Only Use the Shotgun to Clear the Path
The score that you get from using the Riot Gun is not that great. You should only use this weapon if you are being overwhelmed or if there are Elite enemies that are too close. More and more Elite enemies will spawn if your score gets higher. Make sure that you save your shotgun ammo if they have not yet spawned.
Save Grenades for Mobs and Chainsaw Enemies
One of the best ways to clear a path is by using Hand Grenades and Heavy Grenades. Try not to use them if there are not that many enemies that are swarming your position.
Use the Explosive Barrels to Gain Time
There are a couple of Explosive Barrels that are scattered around the Village. Try to lure enemies into the area before making them explode. Killing enemies using these explosive barrels gives you additional time.
Loot Every House
There are a couple of useful items such as Grenades, Shotgun Ammo, and First Aid Spray inside the houses. Make sure that you pick them all up to have enough resources when dealing with multiple Elite enemies later on.
Climb the Watchtower Later
The best way to group up enemies while keeping yourself safe is by climbing the watchtower. However, if you do this early on, there are still very few enemies that will climb up to you. It is best that you climb this area once you are sure that you are done looting all the houses and getting all the crystals.
