Mad Chainsaw Mode is the hard mode that you can unlock with a secret code in the Resident Evil 4 Remake demo. Read on to learn how to unlock Mad Chainsaw Mode fast, as well as the Mad Chainsaw Mode and extreme difficulty differences!

There is a secret button code you can perform to unlock the Mad Chainsaw Mode. When on the screen before selecting Main Story, hold L1 and R1 then perform the following code to guarantee Mad Chainsaw Mode unlocks.
Step 1 (PS) | Hold L1 |
Hold R1 |

Step 1 (Xbox) | Hold LB |
Hold RB |

Step 2 | Up |
Left |
Down |
Right |
Step 3 (PS) | Square |
Triangle |
Circle |
X/Cross (2 times) |
Step 3 (Xbox) | X |
Y |
B |
A (2 times) |
The button code to unlock Mad Chainsaw Mode is: Hold L1 + R1, press Up, Left, Down, Right, then press Square, Triangle, Circle, X/Cross, and X/Cross (on PlayStation) and X, Y, B, A, A (on Xbox).
Step 1 | Hold Shift | Hold Space | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Step 2 | W | A | S | D | R | I | E | F | F |
In order for the above code to work, you need to unbind the Space key from the Confirm (Menu) command in Key Bindings and to press Caps Lock before starting Step 1, because the letters need to be capitalized for the code to work.
If you don't perform the secret code, the Mad Chainsaw Mode triggers randomly upon selecting New Game on the start screen of the Chainsaw Demo. To unlock it quickly, you can select New Game, then quit game and exit to the menu if the mode doesn't trigger, over and over until the Mad Chainsaw Mode triggers.
When it triggers, you will be given a prompt where you either accept the challenge or decline.
After it triggers and you accept the challenge, Mad Chainsaw Mode will only be enabled for that 1 playthrough. After beating it (or dying), you'll be sent back to the New Game menu, where you can start another regular playthrough or keep trying to trigger the mode again.
Mad Chainsaw Mode's difficulty setting is set to extreme, where there's no respawning to a previous checkpoint. Below are the other differences of the Mad Chainsaw Mode from the regular demo:
Standard vs Chainsaw Mode Differences |
---|
|
As mentioned above, the checkpoints won't be able to "save" you as dying at any point in Mad Chainsaw Mode brings you back to the title screen. Think of it as an opportunity to really master the basic mechanics of the game before the game releases.
Enemies are tougher and can deal more damage in Mad Chainsaw Mode. Even the grab attacks from Ganados deal increased damage. Get grabbed at the Hunter's Lodge and you will remember it for the rest of the playthrough as it will take you to the brink of death.
The village will be populated a bit more if you choose to take this challenge. For example, you now have to think of a way to take down two or three Ganados instead of one before you get out of the Hunter's Lodge's basement (you can still try running past them, of course).
How to Dodge and Avoid Attacks
Your handy knife becomes more fragile. If you're planning to use it to break free from grabs to avoid taking more damage, you can only do this twice (you can do this thrice on Standard difficulty and still have some for a few slashes). Try to not get caught after the second grab!
Knife Durability: Do Knives Break?
Instead of the regular Chainsaw Villager, you will encounter a more aggresive version with an overheated chainsaw. His chainsaw can still be parried, though, but since he's tougher and faster than the regular Chainsaw Villager, it would be advisable to avoid him completely instead of letting him get close.
There is no reward for simply completing Mad Chainsaw Mode. However, you do earn more pesetas by killing enemies in Mad Chainsaw Mode.
The Chainsaw Man drops 10,000 pesetas when killed in Mad Chainsaw Mode (as opposed to the 3,000 pesetas in the normal mode). If you manage to defeat 2 Chainsaw Men in the village before time runs out, then you can collect at least 20,000 pesetas, which will get you the Excellent! score for the demo.
Mad Chainsaw Mode is the extereme difficulty setting of the Resident Evil 4 Remake's Chainsaw Demo. It only appears on the demo and is confirmed not to be featured in the final, full game.
