Gowry Quest Walkthrough

Quest Objectives

The Sage's Request

Unalloyed Gold Needle

When players first speak with Gowry he will offer a deal. In exchange for the secret to dispelling Sellia's magical barriers, the Tarnished must help an ailing woman named Millicent.

Players will be asked to fetch a key item called the Unalloyed Gold Needle and return it to Gowry for repair. Once fixed, players must give the needle to Millicent at the Church of Plague.

Defeat Commander O'Neil

Commander O

In order to obtain the Unalloyed Gold Needle, players will need to defeat Commander O'Neil in the Swamp of Aeonia.

Tip: For players having a hard time killing the boss, it is recommended to fight him on horseback. Doing so limits his moveset while also allowing you to weave in and out of his wide, sweeping attacks.

How to Beat Commander O'Neil

Complete Millicent's Questline

Millicent

Gowry will disappear from his shack after Millicent is cured. In order to progress his quest, players must finish Millicent's questline up until the point where she visits Gowry's Shack.

Millicent Questline and Location

Return to the Shack

Gowry in His Shack

After completing the first steps of Millicent's questline, simply quit out and re-enter the game (or fast travel away and travel back to Gowry's Shack) to respawn the old sage. Speak to him some more and he will soon sell you Sorceries.

Updates on Millicent's Journey

Once players give the Valkyrie's Prosthesis to Millicent, return to Gowry and he will comment on it. He will also start selling an incantation called Pest Threads after you speak to him. For more dialogue, keep returning to Gowry after Millicent moves locations.

Despair or Death

Gowry in Despair

If players chose to assist Millicent at the end of her quest, returning to Gowry will the see the mage plunged into despair. He will no longer be available as a merchant when this happens.

However, if players chose to challenge Millicent, Gowry will end up dead in his shack. He drops his Bell-Bearing as well as the Flock's Canvas Talisman which greatly raises the potency of incantations when equipped.

Gowry Information and Lore

Lore

  • Gowry is an old sage living at the outskirts of Sellia in the Caelid Wilds. While he appears immobile, Gowry can come and go as he pleases from the shack.
  • Millicent is a young woman who Gowry sees as one of his own daughters. He mentions that he took care of her after finding as a baby in the Aeonia Swamp.
  • Later on, we find out that Gowry knew about the connection between Millicent and Malenia. He falls to despair when Millicent decides to die on her own terms by removing the Unalloyed Gold Needle.

Trivia

  • Killing Gowry before helping Millicent will show you a body of the Child of Rot. This means Gowry has multiple bodies and will keep coming back until you help him with Millicent's problem.
  • If players progress Sellen's questline until she tells you to seek out Lusat (another master of Glintstone Sorcery), she will mention it was a Sellian Sorcerer who was cooped up nearby that gave her Lusat's Glintstone Key.
  • If players helped Millicent, they can still kill Gowry to obtain his Bell Bearing and the Flock's Canvas talisman without any consequences.

Gowry Quotes

"Oh, a pleasure to see you, a pleasure indeed. I am Gowry. A great sage, in my day, anyway."
"Thank you kindly. For giving the needle to Millicent. Now she, too, can begin her journey. And stare her fate straight in the eye. You've been a saint, through and through. As thanks, I vow to impart to you my knowledge of the lost sorceries of the Sellians, descendants of the Eternal."
"Indeed, Millicent did visit this hovel of a home. It seems the memories eaten away by the rotting sickness yet remain, but faintly. However, she has no need of me, any more. No, she must embark on her journey, and stare her fate in the eye. I musn't impede."
"As I've aged, I've found the best way to aid the young...Is to be forgotten."
