Smithing Master Hewg Quest Walkthrough

Quest Objectives

The Prisoner-Smith of the Tarnished

When players first meet Smithing Master Hewg, he will explain his situation as a captive of the Tarnished. He offers his services to you, allowing players to do the following:

  • Strengthen Armaments
  • Apply Ashes of War
  • Duplicate Ashes of War
  • Sell Items for Runes

How to Upgrade Weapons

Convince Hewg to Speak to Roderika

Hewg will have additional dialogue once players complete Roderika's quest and get her to come back to The Roundtable Hold.

Speak to both Hewg and Roderika to unlock the option of Spirit Tuning. This allows players to strengthen their Spirit Ashes for all the future fights to come.

How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes

Catch Him Praying to Queen Marika

Hewg Praying

Players will also be able to catch Hewg praying to Queen Marika before his anvil. He mentions something about a god-slaying weapon that will make more sense as you progress the game. Speak to him about the prayer for additional dialogue.

Refusal to Leave the Roundtable Hold

Hewg Keeps Smithing

After players set the Erdtree alight, the Roundtable Hold will also start burning down. Hewg's chains will be broken but he will refuse to leave the Hold. Instead, he tells players he will keep on smithing as long as your goal is to slay a god.

Losing His Memories

Roderika Stays with Hewg

After you defeat Maliketh, Hewg will seemingly forget all that has happened until that point. Speaking to him at the Roundtable Hold will have him question who you are and what is happening.

While Roderika does comment on his behavior, both characters will stick around, meaning you will still be able to access their smithing and spirit tuning services.

Smithing Master Hewg Information and Lore

Lore

  • Smithing Master Hewg is a demi-human shackled to the Roundtable Hold as a prisoner. He strengthens weapons and manipulates ashes of war for the use of the Tarnished challenging the demigods.
  • Later on, he takes Roderika under his wing, mentoring the her to become the expert spirit tuner he knows she could be. As they spend more time working alongside each other, Hewg comes to regard Roderika as his own daughter.
  • Eventually, Hewg reveals that the terms of his imprisonment was tied to Queen Marika. The imprisoned queen had apparently charged him to forge a god-slaying weapon. It is for this reason that he continues smithing even as the Roundtable Hold starts to burn.
  • When the capital turns to ash, Hewg starts losing his memories. The only thing left is his singular desire to forge the god-slaying weapon for the Tarnished.

Trivia

  • During your initial conversation with Smithing Master Hewg, he comments on a mysterious She who he fears so much that he welcomes being a prisoner of the Tarnished. You will find out later on that she is Queen Marika.
  • Hewg's Hammer can be found inside the Fortified Manor in Leyndell. To get it, head inside the manor and go to the area where the anvil would be back at the Roundtable Hold. Hewg's Hammer should be there to loot.

Smithing Master Hewg Quotes

"You're a new face. No matter, it's all the same. Lay out your arms. Let's get smithing."
"Despite my differences, the weapons get stronger, all the same. Given time, technique never fails. Besides, it helps me forget. The sheer terror of her..."
"The girl has come a long way. As ever, time and technique have made her stronger. Tis good to see. An imprisoned monster does not deserve an apprentice, or a daughter. But at times, that's precisely what she feels like to me. I've gone soft. And it isn't easy."
"Use my masterpiece to slay a god. That is all that I have lived for. And my promise to Q-queen Marika. But do me a favor, and do look after the girl."
"Weren't you listening? As I've always said. You came to challenge the demigods, and their god. To slay them. And as long as you do, I will always smith your weapons. It is what I wish. To smith a weapon for you to slay a god."
