Bolstering Materials can be purchased from nomadic merchants and special NPCs such as Iji in limited quantities. Unlimited amounts of bolstering materials can be bought from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold by offering them Bell Bearings.
Bell Bearings only offer non-Ancient versions of Smithing Stones and non-Great versions of Gloveworts. The final versions of these bolstering materials can only be found out in the world and iterations must be found in further New Game Plus playthroughs.
Some of the Scarabs found throughout the Lands Between may drop a bolstering material upon defeat, such as various Somber Smithing Stones.
Scarabs are insects found rolling a ball and emiting a glittering or chime-like sound. They will attempt to run away when approached or attacked. Other Scarabs are invisible and can be traced by looking for a glowing trail.
List of All Scarab Locations and Drops
Plenty of bolstering materials are usually found out in the overworld of the Lands Between or from defeating enemies. Most of these can also be found found inside treasure chests or on corpses in the legacy dungeons and catacombs.
Some bolstering materials are rewarded from NPCs such as Sorceress Sellen when completing their questlines. These questlines may be long and complex, so make sure to pay attention to NPC dialogue and key items when doing them.
Church of Elleh Smithy | Map Location |
---|---|
Weapons can be upgrade with Smithing Stones at a smithing table. These smithing tables are found in the open world and the first one can be found at the Church of Elleh.
Note that you can only upgrade your weapons to +3 at these tables. To upgrade weapons further, you will need to visit a blacksmith.
Smithing Master Hewg at the Roundtable Hold and Blacksmith Iji east of Liurnia of the Lakes can upgrade your weapons to +10 or +25 depending on the type of weapon you are upgrading.
Standard weapons can be upgraded to +25 using regular Smithing Stones while Special and Legendary weapons can be upgraded to +10 with Somber Smithing Stones. Upgrading weapons costs Runes.
Gloveworts are used to upgrade Spirit Ashes and can only be done through Roderika at the Roundtable Hold. She can be found for the first time at Stormhill Shack. You will need to advance her questline with Smithing Master Hewg before she can offer spirit tuning.
Similar to upgrading armaments, Standard Spirit Ashes are upgraded to +10 with Grave Gloveworts while Special and Legendary Spirit Ashes are upgraded to +10 with Ghost Gloveworts. Upgrading Spirit Ashes costs Runes.
Bolstering Material Type | Type Upgraded |

Two unique bolstering materials are Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears. With the exception of one Golden Seed being available as a starting keepsake, these materials cannot be bought anywhere and must be sought out in the Lands Between.
Sacred Tears are found at churches (though not all churches have one) while Golden Seeds can be found at the foot of glowing, golden trees.
