Where to Find Key Items

Purchase from Merchants

Key Items such as Cookbooks, Stonesword Keys, and even Lost Ashes of War can be bought from nomadic merchants found across the Lands Between. Look out for any of them on your journey and purchase these items whenever you can.

Obtained as Loot While Exploring

Some Key Items can be found inside treasure chests, dead bodies, secluded part of an area, or rewarded by NPCs. Notable ones are Maps, Crystal Tears, Prayerbooks and Sorcery Scrolls.

Make sure to look out for the telltale glow of an item while exploring the Lands Between. You can get clues to the location of certain items through NPC dialogue or by checking any unexplored parts of the map.

Defeat Bosses

You can also obtain Key Items such as Remembrances from certain bosses which can grant equipment and spells, Deathroots for advancing Gurranq's questline, and Dragon Hearts for Dragon Communions (in Caelid or Limgrave).

What are Key Items?

Used for Quests

The function of Key Items as a whole is broad and can range from being important items related to NPCs such as the Fingerslayer Blade (for The Age of Stars ending) to giving the Tarnished access to more items from the Twin Maiden Husks.

Most of these items are used to advanced main quests and side quests. Some, however, are optional and do not need to be obtained to complete the game.

Aside from quests, other Key Items serve more mundane and miscellaneous purposes such as Stonesword Keys which are used to clear most non-boss fog walls and Bell Bearings which make it easier to obtain Smithing Stones and Gloveworts in unlimited amounts.
