The best augments for your Arisen and Pawns will greatly depend on how you want to play through the game. For example, Magick users would prefer having Sagacity over Verve. The augments listed above are generally good to equip on any Vocation, so you're free to mix and match augments as needed.

Augments are unlocked for purchase by earning Discipline Points (DCP) from completing activities such as defeating monsters, finishing main and side quests, or other exploration-related activities with the equipped vocation.
It is best to play different vocations to unlock augments since you can equip these to any vocation, allowing for a mix-and-match of beneficial effects. Augments must be purchased first with Discipline Points before you can equip them.
Augments serve as permanent buffs that can either increase stats, improve combat performance, or add more utility via new effects so as long as they are equipped.
You can only have up to 6 augments equipped at a time, so plan which Augments to use for you and your Pawn since you can only change them at a Vocation Guild.
Mettle comes from the Fighter Vocation while Subtley comes from Thief.
Augments are highly beneficial since you can equip them to any vocation. For example, the Fighter's Thew Augment is generally alright to equip in most vocations since they increase additional weight.
Likewise, Thief's Verve beneficial to even more straightforward combat vocations such as the Fighter class.
