Although Dragon's Dogma 2 is set in a different world within the same universe as the first game, the destiny of the Arisen (the player character) and its outcomes are what connect the two games.
Dragon's Dogma 2 follows the premise of the first game, wherein a dragon selects an individual to become the Arisen by stealing their heart, making the retrieval of the Arisen's heart the primary objective for the player.
Dragon's Dogma 2 will likely share similar thematic elements with the first game in terms of consequences of the choices made by the Arisen, such as the Arisen's potential destiny to rule over the human kingdom of Vermund, mirroring the possibility of becoming the ruler of Gransys in the first game, if the right decisions were made.
New Features and Gameplay Changes

The plot of the first game revolves around the Arisen seeking the dragon that stole their heart in order to retrieve it. Upon encountering the dragon, the Arisen faces two choices: sacrifice their beloved or defeat the dragon in combat.
If the Arisen chooses the former, their beloved will be sacrificed in exchange for wealth and power. In the first game, this is the case with the former Arisen, now Duke of Gransys, Edmund Dragonsbane.
Choosing the latter and successfully defeating the dragon plunges the world into chaos. In this scenario, the Arisen meets the Seneschal, who offers two further choices: take his place as the Seneschal or reject the offer. If the Arisen accepts the offer and is defeated by the Seneschal, they become a dragon tasked with finding a new Arisen. However, if the Seneschal is defeated, the current Arisen becomes the new Seneschal.
Rejecting the offer teleports the Arisen back to their hometown before the dragon appeared. The character is no longer the Arisen, and the Seneschal finds a new Arisen to take their place.
Should You Play Dragon's Dogma 1 First?
The tale of the Arisen begins when the Dragon steals their heart. The entire plot revolves around the Arisen reclaiming their stolen heart from the Dragon by defeating it, with the Arisen's trusted Pawns by their side.
The Arisen embarks on a journey to the two main kingdoms, Vermund and Battahl, in order to gather more information about the dragon and its whereabouts.
If Dragon's Dogma 2 follows the plot of the first game, then the Arisen's destiny depends on their choices in the game, whether they become the next ruler of Vermund, the next guardian of the world, or the dragon tasked with finding and choosing the next Arisen.
A false Arisen sits in the human kingdom of Vermund, plotted by Queen Disa herself to secure the throne for her son. Traditionally ruled by the Arisen, the kingdom of Vermund draws you into a power struggle upon your arrival.
The beastren kingdom, Battahl, believes that Pawns are sources of misfortune. Instead of revering the Arisen, the beastren nation worships the Lambent Flame with the empress Nadinia at the heart of the faith.
The Lambent Flame acts as the beastren's religion, uniting and allowing them to believe that it wards off calamity. The reason they see Pawns as a source of misfortune is because Pawns are created by the Arisen, whom the beastrens despise, and the Pawns loyally follow their creator's every command.
In an interview with IGN, the director of Dragon's Dogma 2, Hideaki Itsuno, mentions that the world of Dragon's Dogma 2 is set in a parallel universe within the same universe. It appears that not all roads lead to Gran Soren.
As the game is set in the same universe, players will notice that certain parts of the world sense similarities when comparing the first game to the second one.
