How to Start A Game of Wits

Reach the Mountain Shrine

You can start A Game of Wits as early as finishing the Tale's Beginning main quest by making your way to the Mountain Shrine north of the Checkpoint Border Town. Speak to the Sphinx once you arrive to start the quest.

We recommend taking this side quest once you've leveled up sufficiently in your vocation and have strong weapons and armor as the path leading to the Mountain Shrine is full of strong enemies.

How to Complete A Game of Wits

  1. Solve the Sphinx's Riddles
  2. Defeat the Sphinx

Solve the Sphinx's Riddles

Accepting the Sphinx's challenge will require you to solve her riddles, with each riddle being different to each other and often requiring you to travel to different locations for the solution.

Riddle Solution
Riddle of the Eyes ・Give the Sealing Phial from the room below the shrine to the Sphinx
Riddle of Madness ・Present your Main Pawn or Beloved to the Sphinx
Riddle of Wisdom ・Recruit the Capcom-made Pawn named SphinxParent, SphinxFather, or SphinxMother and present them to the Sphinx
Riddle of Conviction ・Give the Sphinx any item
Riddle of Rumination ・Give the Sphinx the Finder's Token located in the first place you received a Seeker's Token for your current playthrough
Riddle of Reunion ・Find the Sphinx in Frontier Shrine west of Checkpoint Rest Town
Riddle of Futility ・Bring the vase to Ser Maurits in Battahl without the vase breaking. You can also bring the NPC to the vase itself
Riddle of Recollection ・Retrieve the NPC the Sphinx requests to see. This is either Dante or Vergil located in Checkpoint Rest Town
Riddle of Contest ・Arrange the statues based on how many riddles you have solved
Riddle of Differentiation ・Defeat the Enemy that the Sphinx spawns by throwing them off the cliff

There are a total of 10 Riddles you need to solve to complete this quest. After solving the first five riddles, the Sphinx will move to a new location called Frontier Shrine west of Checkpoint Rest Town.

Defeat the Sphinx

Dragon

After solving all the riddles, the Sphinx will try to fly away so attack her to start a boss battle. If you're an Archer, you can equip the Unmaking Arrow that you received by solving the 9th riddle to instantly kill the Sphinx.

Defeating the Sphinx will reward a key that you can use to unlock the chest behind her spot that awards the Eternal Wakestone, which also ends the quest.
