| Required Side Quests | How to Access |
|---|---|
| Where There's a Will | Speak to Joshua after unlocking Back to Their Origin. |
| Priceless | Read a letter from Joshua titled Concern for Jill after completing Where There's a Will. |
In order to access the DLC quests, two other key Side Quests need completing. Luckily, these quests unlock immediately after Back to Their Origin becomes available, so they're hard to miss.
Completing them allows Clive to be accompanied by both Jill Warrick and Joshua Rosfield, who play roles in the DLC scenarios.
| # | The Rising Tide Objectives |
|---|---|
| * | ![]() Complete Echoes of the Fallen First! The DLC scenarios can be tackled in any order once they're unlocked. However, the narrative is set such that Echoes of the Fallen is best done before The Rising Tide, and both should be cleared before kicking off the endgame at Origin. Don't worry, Ultima will wait for you. ▶DLC Guide |
| 1 |
![]() Investigate the Unmarked Missive in Northreach You'll begin The Rising Tide with a letter in Clive's Chambers. Read it to find a mysterious offer to contact the Dominant of Leviathan, the long-lost Eikon of Water. You'll then need to go to Northreach and speak to Leyla, one of the employees of the Dame. ▶How to Open Letters at the Reading Table |
| 2 |
![]() Head to the Camp Near the Coast Leyla will direct you to a small camp outside Northreach, just along the coast where you can see the massive, crystal-like wave across the bay. Investigate the camp to meet Shula, the Tributary of the Motes of Water and your companion for the duration of the quest. |
| 3 |
![]() Cross the Bay to Mysidia Shula will inform you of the need to make contact with Leviathan's Dominant, and escort you to the hidden paradise of Mysidia, a brand-new region of Valisthea where a magical glamour restores the natural beauty of the land. ▶Valisthea Interactive Map |
| 4 |
![]() Make for Haven After some walking, you'll see the full sweep of Mysidia, and will need to make your way to the village of Haven, secret home to the Motes of Water. Along the way, investigate behind some rocks to find a chest containing the Reflection of Fire, first in a new line of DLC-exclusive accessories that improves your Eikonic Feats! |
| 5 |
![]() Explore Haven Upon arriving at Haven, Shula will direct you to the Witanhall, the town center, for a briefing on what you need to do in Mysidia. After you leave to head to Leviathan's location, two simple side quests will unlock: |
| 6 |
![]() Head to Tailwind Bay Continue with the main quest by leaving Haven for Tailwind Bay, to the northeast of the map. You'll encounter enemies on the way, including Final Fantasy XVI's version of Tonberries. Tonberries are slow to approach but can lunge with their knives to deal high damage. |
| 7 |
![]() Visit the Surge You'll unlock the world map and activate a new node called The Surge. Visit this area to see the dry crater where Waljas, the Dominant of Leviathan sits frozen in time. Approach for a cutscene and a fight with a mini-boss, the Egi Perykos. Clive will also unlock use of the Leviathan Eikonic Abilities. Read the tutorials and learn the mechanics of Leviathan's feat, Serpent's Cry. Use the abilities to take down Perykos, and for your trouble, you'll earn crafting materials that will allow you to craft Tidestrike. |
| 8 |
![]() Explore Mysidia After the cutscenes back at Haven, you will need to head to the Maiden's March and enter the next major area, the Aire of Hours, but we advise accomplishing some side quests to unlock more useful gear and features of Mysidia: |
| 9 |
![]() Enter the Ruins Pick up the main quest by heading to the ruins at Maiden's March. There are several groups of enemies there that you can fight, but the main one is a Temple Couerl that blocks the entrance. The Couerl acts like most others, so you shouldn't have to change your strategies. You will then unlock The Aire of Hours on the world map. |
| 10 |
![]() Enter the Aire of Hours These ruins host two of the three main bosses of The Rising Tide. Enter the Aire and fight your way past groups of Tonberries. You'll also find a chest with The Will of Water (Cross Swell) nearby. |
| 11 |
![]() Defeat the Mini-Bosses Two mini-bosses bar your way into the inner temple. The first is the Master Tonberry, a bigger version of the regular Tonberry with a massive sword instead of a knife. Watch out for its large swings, then take it down to earn Fool's Gold, a material for crafting the excellent Tonberry Knife weapon later. After the Master Tonberry, you'll face another Temple Couerl that guards a chest containing Reflection of Wind (Deadly Embrace). From here, switch to a boss-fighting build. |
| 12 |
![]() Defeat Hreidmar! You will meet the massive dragon Hreidmar, which is a meaner, poison-spewing version of Fafnir, with many similar moves. Be careful of its toxic puddles, and use moves like Cold Snap or Leviathan's enhanced dodge to keep mobile. When defeated, Hreidmar drops Bilious Scales for crafting and Reflection of Lightning (Blind Justice) ▶Hreidmar Boss Tips |
| 13 |
![]() Fight to the Nave Keep exploring the Aire of Hours, fighting through small groups of enemies, including some Ice-element Frost Bombs and a Master Tonberry with an escort. At the final staircase, switch back to a single-target build. |
| 14 |
![]() Defeat the Timekeeper! The Timekeeper is an Ice-empowered knight that rapidly switches between different weapons and ice attacks. He's highly mobile, so take advantage of moves like Serpent's Cry, Cold Snap, and Diamond Dust to slow him down long enough to lay into him for a stagger. Defeating the Timekeeper will earn you the Timeless Gardbrace for crafting and Reflection of Ice (Cold Snap). ▶Timekeeper Boss Tips |
| 15 |
![]() Confront Leviathan at the Surge Defeating the Timekeeper allows Shula to undo the spell imprisoning Waljas, but the Dominant of Water is well and truly furious, threatening to engulf the village in a tidal wave. You will have no choice but to load into The Surge on the world map and confront the raging Eikon on your own. After loading in, proceed to the marker, fighting two groups of enemies led by Egis. Continue approaching the massive column of water to trigger an Eikon battle with Leviathan |
| 16 |
![]() Defeat Leviathan! The first stage of the battle will involve several Cinematic Clashes. You will take control as Ifrit, avoiding Leviathan as it attempts to strike you and hit you with water projectiles. After the cinematic section, one of the toughest boss fights in the game will begin, thanks to its tight timing. Fight Leviathan on the surface of the water, and then break his barrier with effective combo use to end the battle and save Mysidia! ▶Leviathan Boss Tips |
| 17 |
![]() Keep Helping Haven Though quelling Leviathan has solved the immediate crisis in Mysidia, there's still more to do in the region. After returning to Haven, you'll receive the Haven Signboard curiosity, and unlock several more rewarding side quests: |

Hreidmar is a massive landbound dragon that's a straight upgrade in threat level from Fafnir, the game's first true boss fight. Hreidmar will use powerful melee slams, and opens the fight with Rampage. Keeping away from Hreidmar's sides is recommended, as he can roll to the side and spin in ways that are hard to dodge.
After staggering, Hreidmar will spread poison that lingers on the ground, reducing your safe area. Like Fafnir, it will also roll up and spin around the arena, spreading poison all the while.

The Timekeeper is an agile and hard-hitting ice-element warrior that switches weapons to signal different attacks. To cope with his attacks, like Hailstorm, Flash Freeze, and the hammer-bound Glacial Strike, you'll want to stay agile. He also gets a lot of distance in his attack patterns, so incorporating ranged attacks and Leviathan's powers can help you deal more consistent damage.

Fought exclusively in Eikonic form, Leviathan is a fearsome foe and some of the most difficult fighting in Final Fantasy XVI.
Ensure that you're using special skills like Spitfire and Brimstone often to drive Leviathan's health lower.
During the fight Leviathan will charge Troubled Waters, forcing you to break its shield before it can destroy the village.
