A Land Reliant on the Magic of the Mothercrystals

Final Fantasy 16 is set in Valisthea, a land studded with Mothercrystals: mountain-sized magical crystals that bless people with the power of aether. Aether allows people to cast magic, and acts as the fuel and energy that powers their everyday lives.

The Mothercrystals are spread across Valisthea: the east continent of Ash, and the west continent of Storm. Civilizations developed around the Mothercrystals, settling into the six realms of Valisthea in the present day.

Aside from the Mothercrystals, the other main force of power in Valisthea are the Dominants, gifted humans with the ability to harness the abilities of the Eikons, powerful forces of mass destruction.

In some nations, Dominants are treated as royalty and leaders in admiration for their strength, while in others people fear them and force them as weapons of war.

The Blight Threatens to Consume Everything

FF16 - Blight
While the nations of Valisthea have lived under an uneasy peace between each other, tensions have escalated in recent times as the Blight, referring to the depletion of aether, has surfaced and is threatening to destroy everything. Lands without signs of life and magic, dubbed the deadlands, has become a common phenomenon throughout the world.

The nations' reliance on aether has caused them to come into war to claim possession of the final flickers of aether from the Mothercrystals.

Recurring Series Features Reimagined

FF16 - Crystal
Many elements from previous titles reappear in FF16 and are reimagined to fit the world's setting and story. Crystals, a feature present in many of the previous games, are portrayed as fuel that powers the nations, and its depletion has caused them to get into conflict with each other.

The Eikons, the summons that appear in certain attacks from previous games, are given a bigger role in FF16's story as the powerful forces instrumental in shaping Valisthea's nations.
