In the April 2023 FF16 State of Play livestream, FF16 was described as the first true action RPG in the series, and the gameplay experience was likened to a thrilling, high-speed rollercoaster ride.

The combat system is third-person real time action. The Active Time Battle (ATB) elements of the traditional Final Fantasy games that has been gradually being replaced by action elements in the newer titles, has been finally removed in FF16.

AI-Controlled Companions

FF16 - Party
Unlike other games, you'll only be able to control the main character Clive, and not the companions that join you across the story. They are controlled by the AI, providing support to Clive and constantly adapting and responding to his actions.

Torgal

One of the allied companions that join you is the loyal dog, Torgal. Unlike other companions, Torgal will uniquely be available throughout your whole journey, and while he's still mostly controlled by AI, you'll be able to issue a few commands to him during battle.

Customizable Ability Loadout

Clive can learn and upgrade skills tied to the different Eikons; you can choose which abilities you want to use in battle. You'll be able to learn and upgrade these by collecting Ability Points, which can be collected by defeating enemies.

You'll also be able to switch between Eikons mid-battle, allowing you to access a wide array of skills on the fly.

Tools for Players New to Action-RPGs

Timely Evasion Indicator

There are tools provided for players not used to action gameplay called the Timely Accessories.

One of these accessories provide QTE windows where the player must press a button as time is slowing down, allowing players to evade enemy attacks. Another accessory fully automates evasion altogether. The devs encourage players to choose which gameplay style works best for them.
