Joshua's Role in Final Fantasy 16

Clive's Younger Brother and Dominant of the Phoenix

The second son of the Archduke of Rosaria and Clive's younger brother by five years. Joshua awoke as the Dominant of the Phoenix soon after his birth. Despite his noble upbringing, Joshua treats all his father's subjects with warmth and affection—none more so than Clive, whom he deeply admires.

Joshua often laments that it was he, the frail and bookish younger son, who was granted command of the firebird's flames, and not his stronger, braver brother. While Clive will gladly throw himself into any danger, Joshua quails at the sight of a carrot on his dinner plate. But carrots become the least of his concern when he, too, is swept up into the tragic events that change Clive's life forever.

Does Joshua Die?

Vanquished by Ifrit at the Beginning

During the Flight of the Fledgling main quest, Joshua unleashed Phoenix and clashed with a mysterious dark Eikon named Ifrit. The fight ended with Ifrit seemingly defeated, but as soon as the Phoenix got close enough, the second fire Eikon grabbed and mauled the Phoenix on the ground.

As the final blow, Ifrit punches through Phoenix's chest and creates a massive explosion that nearly wiped out the area.

It is still unclear if Joshua was actually slain, as resurrection and being eternal are some feats that make Phoenix unique. One thing's for sure, though: what Clive witnessed that night will fuel his vengeance for the most part—if not the entirety—of the story.

Reunited With Clive During Fire in the Sky

Joshua was thought to have fallen after the incident at the Phoenix Gate, but 13 years later, he reappeared at Drake's Head to help his brother Clive take on Bahamut. It is also possible that Joshua really did die that night, but was resurrected with the Phoenix's powers.

These events took place during the main quest Fire in the Sky.
