There are three ways to leave the Lesser Zone and this involves giving the Ward Sensors to either Richter or Zotov during the A Needle in a Haystack main mission.
Giving the Ward Sensors to Richter lets you exit from the Northern Checkpoint and reach the Garbage region.
If you give the Ward Sensors to Zotov, you can leave from the Western Checkpoint and reach the Chemical Plant region or exit east to reach the Cordon region and visit the Rookie Village.
Zalissya is a Loner base found in the middle of the Lesser Zone. This is the first base that you will visit in the main story and serves as your initial base as a Loner until you decide to ally yourself with a different faction.
A crucial side mission, On the Edge, occurs right after completing To the Last Drop of Blood main mission where you will receive Gaffer's call for aid to help defend Zalissya from a hostile faction. Failing to defend the town makes you lose access to its Traders, Technician, Guide, bed, and personal stash.
Make sure to create a manual save at this point as you will likely encounter a bug that softlocks your progress, preventing you from saving the town.
These NPCs can be found in Zalissya. Technicians are merchants that can repair and upgrade your armor. Guides allow you to fast travel to previously unlocked areas. Traders can you money in exchange for Artifacts. Medics sell you healing and recovery items for the road.
