Equipping Artifacts with Weight Bonuses will allow you to carry more weight without the need for equipment upgrades or drugs. Most artifacts that give bonus weight can be found in gravitational anomalies. Alternatively, you can seek out traders in some Bases who also sell bonus weight artifacts like Stone Blood.

To temporarily increase your carry weight, you can pop a Hercules drug which allows you to add +20 kg Carry Weight to your max of 80 kg for 300 seconds. While rare, this is the perfect consumable if you want to bring back loot during those doing long, drawn out missions that take you across the Zone.
For a more permanent boost to carry weight, you can opt to upgrade your Armor with Carrying Capacity upgrades. While this isn't available for all armors, it is one of the best upgrade investments you can get, especially if you like a particular piece of armor enough to fully upgrade it.
Note: Do note that most carrying capacity upgrades are the final upgrade you get for their upgrade tree. As a consequence, carrying capacity upgrades are very expensive to get, especially during early game.
In addition to carry weight upgrades, you can also purchase upgrades that reduce the weight of your weapon and armor. While these are small reductions on paper, they all add up, especially when you're fully kitted out with heavier combat armor and heavier guns.
You can equip certain Stalker Suits with unique attributes that allow you to carry more weight without being over-encumbered. For example, the Cuirass Exoskeleton allows you to carry more weight as it adds 8.0kg to your maximum weight (at the cost of not being able to sprint).
While it may seem limited each time you open your inventory, it will automatically expand to accommodate the loot you pick up. Instead of a static window, it will become scrollable (especially when you're picking up extra guns and armor while exploring).
The initial maximum weight is 80 kilograms. Carrying more than this weight will result in your character being Overloaded. Movement becomes slower and stamina drains faster when running. If you exceed 80 kilograms, you will not be able to move at all.
